You know what really grinds my gears? The Gears Strike Back

Well that’s a report to social services :rage:

WHAT?

“I’m sorry, I can not guarantee that, as I don’t ask my instructors what their sexual orientation is.”

Their orientation will not impact the great work that they do in the cadet forces.

Just say yes, all your staff are thoroughly miserable with no sense of humour.

If they have old fashioned views then they might have an old fashion vocabulary.

Unfortunately I wasn’t the one who was asked the question, it was the DC of a unit I was helping at. That was basically the reply they got from the coy OC, with a bit more added about D&I. The recruit still turned up to the unit so I guess the parent had second thoughts, or their OH talked some sense into them.

no point coming to our Wing. My wife is convinced we’re more the navy Cadets given the sexual orientation of many of my CFAV friends.
(in truth i think my broader set of friends spread across the Wing and the 20-something Sqns casts a wider net than her work gang and other girlfriends.

If they’d have come to my squadron, they’d only have had to look at my facemask to get an answer to that question…

That’s fine, tell them to come back when they’ve located the twenty first century

It’s this kind of comment that is unhelpful and homophobic.

:100: we need to eliminate all outdated stereotypes if we’re to progress E&D within the organisation

Is it homophobic? Or just an observation.

I find that the organisation does seem to have a higher proportion of LGBTQ+ staff than most other settings.

As an LGBT CFAV I find the organisation, generally, a very warm and welcoming place - and those in it generally very accepting.

I think it is a fantastic testament to the policies and hard work of the D&I bunch.

I think it’s the ‘navy cadets’ comment that’s throwing people (and me).

Oh I see, when I read that I just had The Village People “In the Navy” playing in my head…

It’s that sort of innocent naivety that can get people into inadvertent trouble!

Exactly this…

just because this is seemingly true doesn’t mean it’s ok to throw around terms from the 80s which many from the community would find offensive

In areas of high ethnic diversity, you wouldn’t think it’s ok to be racist, would you?

Some staff I’ve come across do think it’s ok sadly

It is perhaps an unhelpful stereotype, but I personally wouldn’t have said it was homophobic.

That’s also my experience as a queer CFAV who just 2 years ago was unnecessarily terrified of coming out (you’d never believe it now )

Found out that our Wing can’t get uniform orders because it insists on ordering all sqns’ uniform in one go, and the stores in question can’t handle that amount and needs to order directly from the manufacturer, and that’s taking months to arrive.

What the actual… That’s a new one. Our WHQ put it in when you give it to them. Then normally a few orders build up for collection then someone goes and gets it all.

Try being from a minority which is almost universally maligned, but not physically obvious that you’re a part of. People say horrible things when they think they can get away with it.
