You know what really grinds my gears? The Gears Strike Back

Crazy jr doesn’t have the best handwriting despite a lot of effort to improve it, has been scoring 8s and 9s on his tests whilst they have had to do everything online and though we asked for him to be able to use a computer for the past few years school have done nothing. Really hoping it doesn’t impact his results too much so he can get onto the course he wants at college.

You may have this checked already or it may not be an issue to this extent but it may be worth checking for dysgraphia. This would be covered by the Equality Act (2010) for when they want to start work and the Exam boards need to give reasonable adjustments, i.e. a scribe or computer.

Thanks for the reply, don’t know if he’s been tested but he can make it more legible if he’s forced to slow down which is why it was so frustrating as I had a book and special paper and it was fine then get an exam from the school and there are a few the teachers mark 0 because they can’t read it.

Guess part of it is moving with the times and technology. I can’t say it’s any worse than that of any of the doctors I’ve had over the years but with exams now scanned and shared electronically and having to get through so many, in the teachers words, if the marker can’t read it instantly they will mark it zero as it’s too much effort to try and understand it. So with poor legibility with the quality reduced by scanning there was a risk of not getting the 4 but after the great results he’s been getting it’s made me a little frustrated after asking for over 3 years.

Hopefully you can use this to your advantage and demand an assessment

Worth an assessment, although it can be costly it’s important and hopefully this is something the school would be able to do so free or lower cost than going privately.
I don’t know enough about dysgraphia but if processing speed is an issue then may also be worth an assessment for Dyslexia. A good dyslexia assessment will examine writing speed, spelling, processing and lots of other bits and should provide suggestions for examinations, such as use of a scribe, word processor, extra time etc.

My writing is messy and at school, I was advised by teachers to write on every other line in exams. Can’t remember the specific benefit of this though, perhaps because there was less words on a page, making it a bit easier to read?

GMG - passwords expiring and needing updating, meaning you need to re-sign in on phone, laptop etc. Only a small gripe today.

I had a tutor at uni who begged us all to do this in our hand written exams too. He said it made it much easier to read.

While I agree with what’s been said above, this isn’t true. They will make a best effort to read (involving multiple markers) but if it’s truly illegible they’ll mark it zero.

If he doesn’t get the grades it may be worth a remark. Often more time is given to those.

We don’t do this at work anymore.

We have software that checks if our passwords appear on known password dumps, if It’s too similar to dictionary words, if it’s complex enough etc

And we use 2-factor Authentication…

Kudos to them.

Chrome now has a feature that points out how old your saved passwords are, duplicate passwords across multiple sites, and maybe also breaches(?). Not looked at it much.

That’s if you use chrome to save them, of course.

I guess the problem is people don’t use passwords that follow the guidance, hence the guidance on not expiring isn’t really relevant. But as we all know everyone just sticks a number on the end and increments it…

I use LastPass to generate passwords for everything I use - it keeps reminding me there are a couple of very old duplicates I use that I keep meaning to update.

What does really GMG are websites that can’t cope with certain characters. I found out last week that the Starbucks accounts can’t have a % in the password

yes, but it’s pretty shocking in 2021 that a global company can’t cope with one specific character in account passwords

Is it something to do with characters that can be used to potentially pass parameters to a server to protect against attack?

I thought the same… wonder if it accepts an underscore

well they should be flipping escaped then. it just reeks of bad / lazy programming
