Is this satire?
Also, this feel more like one for the Trump thread. Satire or not.

Nope, serious POV rewriting history.
I put it here as whilst there probably is over-lap, if this is how representatives are portraying events (& there have been some whoppers told about Venezuela), then some serious mis-direction is going on.
Yeah, that’s fair. It was the Nazi playbook to gain support. If you keep saying what you want people to believe, eventually enough people will believe it.
Enough people over here believe it too…
I had an argument with my mum once as she had stopped watching BBC & ITN as they “don’t have as much news as the other channels” namely Russia Today & GB News.
Took a little effort trying to explain to an 80 year old that whilst yes we live in a free country with generally balanced media & in relatively peaceful times we are still subjected to propaganda by hostile nations & orgs.
People need to remember that “Propaganda” originates from the cockney meaning “needing to have a detailed look”.
Echoes of the Russian play book in full use by The Trump Brigade! Say it often enough and loud enough and shut up the public! Worse than hooligans!
Star Trek has been good at predicting the future.
IPads, video calls, 3d printing…
I think in the timeline, 2026 was the outbreak of WW3…..
I think with tensions rising all over the place ….this might not be far out!
Is there anyone on here who has a fairly active memory of living duringthe cold war?
Reason I ask….. Do you feel that we are closer to it going hot now… or back then?
It’s a question I really need to ask my parents.
I caught the end of it (I was very young
)
yes and no, there was a lot of talk about the world tipping into nuclear war in the early 80s but the world were in today seems much more unstable, with several competing power blocks.
At least back then we knew who the enemy was (as did they).
It’s definitely different. Back then it was always assumed the Red Army would steamroller over our conventional forces and things would go nuclear within about 72 hours. Evidence from Ukraine suggests otherwise.
As a person born at the end of the 1960s and in secondary school in the early 80s, there threat of MAD was always there. But, the sides were very very defined. The border between NATO and the Warsaw pack was down the middle of Germany.
Today it is very different. Chaos and confusion rules. Old alliances seem fragile and unreliable. While MAD seems further away, the threat of some sort conflict involving NATO and some other power seems closer than ever.
It it very different now.
The big difference between then and now is the size of all the militaries. UK and Europe would constantly have exercises running to test capabilities, TACEVALs, etc. Remember those days, Ex Mallet Blow, etc. were brilliant to watch. Danes, Norweigians, French, Italians, Germans all attacking UK bases.
Also remember the V-bombers doing their dispersal exercises away from their standard bases.
US fighter deployments to the UK, CORONET, several times a year would see 20-40 aircraft from main land US coming across.
So a question based on the above.
We seemed to have more hot conflicts/proxy wars during the Cold War than we do now, yet the threats now appear to be much more multidimensional. Would you say that the minute hand is closer to midnight now than it was during the Cold War period, or vice-versa?
I would say so.
During the cold war there was tension ….but to me it always felt controlled and stable.
Nowadays there seems to be a lot more instability in the world and higher tensions …..more people with nasty buckets of sunshine (and who knows what else!).
I never really felt threatened in the 80’s & 90’s …..but not so sure now!
…but then again, age changes ones opinions and outlooks …lets hope my glass is just half empty.
I would say so to. The problem back then was we knew who the enemy were, now its multiple sources……..
At the time, it was one (known) potential aggressor, with most (if not all) political direction & military strategies (& equipment) focussed accordingly.
Now, heaven only knows!
Everything back then was much more secret with no internet and less media, more reliant on newspapers. We seemed much more capable back then with our own self contained arms, ships and aircraft industries. We have become complacent and too reliant on the USA. I am more concerned now with PUTIN & TRUMP ignoring the world order of things. Born 1952 for context.
I can’t take Putin seriously enough to consider a threat, which is why I’m always banging on about China rather than Russia.
Even without the USA, Russia is no match for European NATO. It wouldn’t even be close.
Unfortunately with modern weapons …..not even being close is still good enough to wipe out millions of people!
