If it hasn’t already started, it’s only a matter of time. As suggested elsewhere here’s a thread to discuss the various sub-conflicts currently ongoing that are threatening to suck us in
Doubt it.
Don’t start panicking yet.
Thanks @Farmerdan
My own personal viewpoint is that we are in pre-WW3; a point very similar to the 1930s pre-WW2 where multiple conflicts had already begun but the arena was not considered to be a global war.
It’s fair to say that the Washington Consensus is beginning to breakdown and declaring The End of History at the end of the Cold War was very much premature.
Sabotage and subterfuge appear to be the modus operandi of this particular conflict, particularly through electronic & cyber warfare. Not just in terms of the obvious such as Russian sabotage of NATO civilian infrastructure, but also with election interference in former Warsaw Pact countries and the funding of pro-nationalist parties in Western Europe.
It’s not a shooty-shooty war for us just yet, but we’re definitely in a war.
I would disagree as I think WW1 would be the better comparison. The great powers jockeying for position - it’s been a slow build over the past 15 years or so.
However I think Russia expending its resources in Ukraine has made it less effectively militarily it could form a military pact with china.
On the other hand, the sanctions on Russia has allowed it to divest it self of any dependency on others so in the event of full on conflict it won’t be as badly effected. Interestingly Trumps focus on tariffs & reducing treaty obligations likewise insulates America from fall out from a global or large regional war.
The insane situation would be simultaneous annexation
USA - Canada or potentially Mexico
Russia - Ukraine & baltics
China - Taiwan & possibly South Korea?
Careful what you wish for
All those gunhoo JL types will be looking for their S10s, dusting off their bivvie bags and waiting for the call up
I resemble that remark
Though I might be a bit long in the tooth. I reckon I could still pass my WHT on the SLR
So my understanding of geopolitics is very much focused on the DPRK.
How concerned should we be about the things kicking off in Israel/Iran? BBC news is now saying Iran is sending ballistic missiles into Israel to inflict “heavy damage”.
That Israel attacked the nuclear facilities is the key thing; this is an escalation from prior attacks. Iran is also flying the red flag of revenge and has declared the actions to be an act of war.
Now we need to see if other countries line up behind either side. It’s likely the US will strongly support Israel - could Russia, China or another larger player support Iran?
That depends on how many get through the four layers of Israeli air defence, and as Iran fires missiles, they reveal their launching sites for strikes.
There will always be ‘leakers’ in any air defence system.
Well, this is from the Domino’s Pizza nearest The Pentagon right now.
Happens during every crisis, they really need to diversify their ordering systems.
From Russias point of view I think you can quote Sean Connery in a bridge too far “I’m not sure if it’s a question of us coming for you or you coming for us” simply put they don’t have the ability to get involved, their plate is full enough (probably part of what made Israel decide now was the time).
As for China they don’t like getting their hands dirty, they would be far more likely to watch it play out and then be on hand to profit from the pieces.
