We’ve finally dropped below 30 degrees inside, 29.2 and I’m sat with the TV on and I can hear the air con unit from the house over the road. If I can hear it and think that’s loud, how loud is it in their house

Anyone ever tried an evaporative air cooler? The Guardian had an article on keeping cool today and they mention them as being a more cost effective form of air conditioning, maybe not as effective as other methods in terms of the temperature they can achieve, but I don’t need to be 17⁰ right now, 25 would be liveable.
They don’t really cool the room over all though. Thermodynamics…
They’re often referred to a swamp coolers, as all they really do is increase the humidity in the room. If you’re not going for AC, a normal fan is probably a better bet.
Isn’t that the opposite of what you’d want?
It’s a trade off. If you live somewhere very dry and hot, they can be pretty effective if used right. You bring fresh hot and dry air in over the cooler. It increases the humidity whilst dripping the temperature. If this can escape out another window they do kind of work.
But if you just put one off these in a sealed room, it’ll briefly feel cooler. Then once the humidity increases it stops working, and then does the opposite. And you end up in a worse position than your stated with.

The down side of all this risk averse behaviour is that we are grooming a generation of wimps who will be frightened to do anything.
I can’t believe how schools can just decide to close!
Its just as hot at home and closing school creates trouble for parents & child care etc.
Why can’t they proceed as normal but cut out sports and PE and realise class will have to go at a much slower pace with lots of drinking water available.

I had one in a previous office, not particularly effective.
Kids were getting heatstroke despite mitigations at my kids primary, I can understand the closure.
It isn’t ideal, my only major gripe with it though is that schools seemed to make the call quite late yesterday afternoon which created a mad scramble.
My local Secondary school was recording temperatures of 40 degrees on Monday in the classroom.
Coming back to the UK - hotter than current location!
A couple of F16s departed as we boarded - earlier on when we dropped off the hire car, we had a freebie display from an F16 too. Family very impressed.

I’ve been closely involved in this locally from an LA perspective…
From my experiences this week…
Nursery’s closed first - fair enough; the little ones are more vulnerable; lots of them aren’t setup for this stuff, do not have access to air conditioning units and lots are struggling in shoddy prefabs and halls. However, that has knock on effects on parents who’ve got 1 in nursery - they need to take the day off as you can’t REALLY leave a little one home alone - that’s bad form.
Primary’s were impacted next - lots of uproar and pressure from parents - several citing the nursery closures. Two schools closed because of lack of staff caused by the nurseries closing, coupled with high numbers of vulnerable staff with health conditions. And yes, schools are THAT close to the budgets that they don’t have a queue of bank staff available that they need to close. And once one closes, it ripples across the district’s Head Teacher What’s app group!
Next up came the secondaries. One declared VERY early doors… but the head is VERY risk averse. The next to close cited staff cover - based on the closure of the nursery and primary’s knocking on to his staff availability - plus a high number of staff with underlying health conditions. PLUS. The heat caused his fire alarm to go squiffy during yesterday (3 false alarms and full evacuations in one day!). So declared it on “safety grounds”… and once he did, the others rippled again!
The LA has ZERO power over the schools as they are all academies.
The local police’s area commander contacted the LA protesting that “because of our decision" (?) they now have had to up their staffing to accommodate a predicted rise in Anti Social Behaviour. I took that call… they completely overlooked that academies can do their own thing!
Local NHS is ramping up - hospital admissions are rising - and it’s all long term, high dependency issues relating to the hot weather… in an environment where staffing levels are stretched because, unsurprisingly, some NHS have vulnerabilities or have school aged children!
Both our local Lowland Search and Rescue Units got the nod yesterday from the Tactical Coordinating Group - step up to heightened readiness - specifically the water teams…
Frustratingly, yesterday the Facebook militia took to their keyboards DEMANDING that schools close for the sake of “health and safety”. One very vocal parent this morning put a post on the same Facebook group asking which would be the best beach to go to… another asked about best local wild swimming spots… and another complained that there’s no portable aircon units available ANYWHERE in our local area to help keep the kids cool now that schools have closed…
These people walk among us.
