Meanwhile I’ve just got back in from a club run with heatrash…
Currently still 31C here at nearly 9pm. 29C inside.
That inside temp hasn’t changed much since getting home. But I found out amusing that coming into a 29C flat felt cool compared to outside after work! Was about 36C I think earlier in the shade.

I think you do - I think it’s for any outdoor activity, from what I remember.
I’ve also been doing my own prep. Remembering that sustained high heat can cause power cuts, and power cuts mean the water pumps fail…
I’ve been able to get 12 litres set aside, just incase.

Raining heavily now & temps dropping
Couple of light showers here this afternoon and evening in South Devon
Interesting reading a thread on the DofE leaders group this morning about mitigating heat. Starting early, covering all skin, extra water etc. Thankfully some sane people in there saying you should cancel. But many disagreeing thinking they can mitigate the risk of 36-40C temps.
As much as we joke about HQ pausing things, it’s absolutely inappropriate to make kids go out walking in the sun when it’s this hot. The risk is far too high, and potentially lethal.
Make good decisions people!

The only way it would even be feasible is to basically do a nocturnal expedition. Nijmegen starts at 2-4am to mitigate the heat.
But that’s on roads. With streetlights and route markings.
Walking around the countryside in the dark with map and compass at 14… nope.

100% agree DofE expeds should not be happening, especially if they’re in hilly areas (most of the East Midlands seem to go to the Peak District for theirs, and we’re due to see some of the highest temperatures around here).
Cadets aren’t always great at keeping themselves hydrated anyhow, let alone in a heatwave on top of a big hill. Mountain Rescue wouldn’t be impressed with having to go sort them out because they chose to plough on.
Even for me, I will run later this week. But I’ll only be doing a short distance and I’ll be in the city on the roads for once, rather than on a trail, so that at least if something does happen there’s people around to take care of me.

Well, it’s currently thundering here (and has been for 2 hours!)on the Southeast Coast, but still expected to be really hot in an hour’s time!
Surely DofE should put out nope Comms and if you do it during those windows of time then it won’t count. That’s what I would do.
But I am an ■■■■, but also frown upon people potentially killing kids

DofE as an organisation don’t regularly comment on actually policy around risk. It’s left up to the individual locations to RA their own activities.
DofE could still be mentioned in any negative publicity resulting from this, so maybe that needs to change?
