The Great Tent Pause of 2023

Do tents spontaneously combust now?

Why not just ban naked flames inside and within a meter or so outside?

Was this really common practice up until this point?

Feels a bit like a control measure putnin place to cover what is already being done!

Anyone got Cadets on an Easter Camp? They go tomorrow donā€™t they?

Or, continue using mk1s and 2s and if they combust, thereā€™s no evidence they werenā€™t 3s or 4s?

Ive got 3 on national marching band camp which starts tomorrow (although they probably wonā€™t be in tents!)

I had HQAC ring me this PM re this issue as I have a camp this weekend - if we had of been using them that would have been disastrous!

It always annoys me when something that has been a problem for a long time is suddenly urgent.

If this has been a problem for over 25 years, surely a grace period of a couple of weeks would be okay?

our winco has put in an emergency call of the back of this seems will impact a couple of planned camps next week which likely have to be cancelled :disappointed:

So itā€™s still fine to use a totaly unacceptable foriegn import as long as its not a mk1 or2

So we canā€™t use MOD tentage, weā€™ll GST Mk1 and 2.

But can we be stopped using non-MOD tentage, what about all those tents used for AT/DofE, do they have the required flame retardant capacity?

What are they going to do about squadrons who ā€˜adapt and overcomeā€™ the issue but donā€™t use RAFAC funds! What controls do RAFAC have over ex-MOD tentage purchase privately :man_shrugging:t2:

What about :rofl::rofl:

Commercially purpose have to meet a certain fire regulations anyway. The issue is that military will often have exceptions or use their own particular chemical protection.

The blanket recall is MoD wide - probably because they donā€™t want tents being used that shouldnā€™t be & avoiding mix up in the future. Weā€™re not the target per se itā€™s just from an operational view from the MoD the tents need to withdrawn.

Itā€™s pretty clear with other releases and restrictions that thereā€™s a focus on cleaning up certain aspects of HSEP within the armed forces at the moment and that includes us.

Itā€™s been pointed out how long weā€™ve been noncompliant - thatā€™s because the MOD does what it can get away with and thatā€™s being fixed to, well probably a minimum level it can get away with.

Only reference I can find to tent types: JSP361 dated 1981

So which tents are we referring to?

Regardless I suspect that the Honourable Artillery Company has something thatā€™s far older, is still used & something they will not give up due to ā€œtraditionā€

ā€œSir, Sir!
Thereā€™s a Col Richard Sharpe here to see you. He says he just wants a quick word about his tentā€

Bravo.

Came across from RAFG to shoot at Bisley in Jul for 2 wks. VW Passat, 2 blokes, rifles, etc, shed loads of beer / wine, small 'fridge, plus our own 12 x 12 tent.

Tent put up on RAFSAA lawn - liner added to keep cool. Two metal-framed beds, 2 wooden wardrobes, lights, 'fridge, cold beer. Very, very comfortable.

Spare 12 x 12 tent next to us - that became the garage to keep the car cool.
