RAF Recruitment Discrimination

Not to that level.

Yeah, I get that. I was only semi joking about that first response. It reminds me of a vulture circling.

Whilst I am glad these issues have come to light, I didn’t really see another way it would come out. Short term this will do a lot of damage to people serving. SM is now going to be scrutinized like mad.

I just hope some long term good comes of it.

Can’t remember the circumstances, but on one of the Mil Twotter feeds some days ago, it was mentioned that she had had a “run in” with some “high-up” previously.

However, the facts seem to support her case. Lots of digs (& rightly so) at CAS from many directions (not just her).

And a different discrimination claim.

As a previous member of the “bucket of sunshine” club, I’m amazed at his attitude, especially as the RN is the sole UK nuclear deterrent.

What a tool

From the article;

However, during his initial officer training he was told it would not be possible for him to serve on a ballistic submarine (SSBN) as a dual national because of security clearance issues.

Makes perfect sense.

My trade has to be British national only as we handle crypto (at least when I joined).
Our mechanical counterparts can be commonwealth / dual national.

Yeah, was same for me in my branch. DV before entry and Brit nationals from birth only.

Don’t need DV for us.

Which is just as well. Don’t fancy that interview.

It was an… Interesting experience, certainly.

An odd midnight thought.

We were told not to get involved with any Top Gun Maverick film promotions etc…

The MOD hoping the same interest to join from the first film would be repeated which was all self seeding and didn’t have recruitment stalls or concurrent campaigns

Im guessing any increase in uptake has been overshadowed by this recruitment blunder?

Will be far too early to tell. Most roles in the RAF are over subscribed and currently closed to applications, especially pilot which has been closed for a year or so now, iirc.

Plus, this TopGun hasn’t had anything like the cultural impact of the first one.

RAF Board meeting today. Interesting indeed that Secretary of State for Defence has retained his role in the new PM’s Cabinet - suggesting Wallace has the trust of Truss.

I wonder if Boris just saw the RAF as being something for the next PM to worry about? If so we could see some action later today, or later this week.

My cadets are male, mostly privileged (though some on scholarships) and largely white. We are one of the top 10 schools for feeding cadets into Sandhurst. I’ve been involved with the CCF for nearly 20 years, and we have not sent a single boy into the RAF despite having a 5* among our old boys.

A lot of this is sheep mentality - the Army boys go into the Guards or the Household Cavalry, mostly, unless they have a family connection to other regiments. The RAF, though, has not been particularly interested in talking to them even before now - the days when a regular RAF liaison officer would visit every year are long gone - and recently when I have had cadets who wanted to be considered as pilots (one of them very able indeed) they have ended up pursuing the Navy instead.

Of the old boys listed on the war memorial, literally dozens died in the RAF in WW2 - so many in the Battle of Britain from the same boarding house that the housemaster took his own life under the strain. The boys don’t feel so welcome now.

Makes a (very bland) statement in a Twitter thread that they’ve deliberately made it impossible to reply to. Seems above board…

Diversity is an admirable goal but can and should be achieved by appointing the best people irrespective of background - as arguably demonstrated by the new Cabinet (though I appreciate not everyone is delighted by them for other reasons!)

More bad news, with the RAF basically admitting earlier stories about illegal orders were true.

So the Gp Capt who resigned was fully justified in her actions, some people need to ‘consider their positions’.

I hope she lands somewhere softly, she deserves it

She followed the requirements of her training despite what it may or may not have cost her in not following but challenging an ILLEGAL order. Well done Ma’am.
