DofE discount for Magnums at Blacks/Millets/GoOutdoors branches especially if there is an offer on.
Otherwise you’re probably better off trying second hand at a nearby army surplus place, a used issued pair of YDS/Bates/Itturi are a better bet than the cadet type brands.
You might find there’s more choice in MOD Brown than black now though.
The argument I’ve heard is something to do with insurance only covering bona fide cadets or something like that, and they’ve interpreted bona fide to mean enrolled. Check ACP 300 but I don’t think you’ll find anything.
Also looked, nothing in there about enrolment etc. This is the relevant section:
Clearly states it will cover all members. I would say a cadet is a member the day they join. You could argue they are a member from the day they are added to SMS too, but that should be pretty soon after joining!
In reality, there probably aren’t that many “formal” off-unit opportunities - most might require uniform - unless you’ve got a super-speedy parent unit who can action uniform demands quickly.
Using enrolment as a yardstick, without any clear definition of when a cadet should be enrolled, and how, is nonsense.
In one definition, I wasn’t enrolled fully until several years into my career, as my unit lacked a padre.
I thought it was after either Part 1 or Part 2 of First Class? So in theory they’re in uniform and know the basics. That might just be how we do it though.
The weather considerations for AEF flying are quite strict - they would normally be flown under "Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC ) = set limits for visibility & cloudbase.
Active sleet & snow would probably not allow VMC conditions - & also, I don’t think that the AEFs have de-icing equipment.
