Promotion Matrix

Its been a “policy” for about a year now just happeneds to be in black and white.

Its hard having those difficult convos without having it in actual policy

Does this now create a three tier system?
WO who is “old school” appointed directly to WO pre-DYER

WO who is promoted through merit having ticked off the promotion matrix criteria (post-DYER but pre-Sept22)

WO who is appointed by RC if deemed essential regardless of having achieved the promotion matrix (post-Sept22)

Why do we need the conversation at all? I would argue that it is plain and clear we are youth leaders, so other than annoying people what benefit does it bring to limit which rank you can get to?

I assume the Vol Gp Cpt will take forward.

Why Region involvement for WO, surely this can sit within the Wing scope?

WO promotions have always been signed off by the Rgnl Comdt. Wg Cdrs only a recommendation

I’m not sure why I wasn’t aware of this - thank you for clarifying.

Or, to look at it the other way… What benefit does it bring to dish out WO rank to everyone and anyone despite them being basically pants?

It makes people feel valued? Isn’t that enough?

Soon to be rebranded WFS…

No. I don’t think it is. Because if everyone gets it, even if they do very little or do it badly, how does that hold any ‘value’ for others?
We’re not here to blow smoke up volunteers backsides. Anyone can attain it if they are prepared to put in the time, the work, and take on the responsibility.
People should be able to look at the highest non-com rank attainable and know that the person holding it had to work to achieve it.

Well clearly not everyone gets it now so that doesn’t hold true.

And yet again we’re in a place of “some people are not applying the current roles or processes, so we’ll make it impossible for nearly everyone to get”.

Yes, but that’s the point. Not everyone should get it… So now, being that it’s granted in recognition of achievement and experience, it has a value… There’s something ‘special’ about attaining it. Just as it has been in our fellow cadets forces for ages.

Also stops those pesky 28 year olds walting about in T&Ls…:grimacing::neutral_face::thinking::shushing_face:

You wouldnt find a 28 year old in the RAF to be fair…most WOs will be nearing 28 years service by the time theyre promoted!

Lets just hope the next move is to elminate as many random nonsense Sqn Ldr posts we now have.
Then all the random Wg cdrs too.
Soo many OF3 AND OF4 at Wing, Reg, Corps.
Just unreal.

IMO it’ll certainly limit some progression, considering if you join as a Sergeant at 20, you could be Warrant Officer at 28, and with end of service at 65 (not including extensions), there’s no more scope for WO promotions for the foreseeable until someone leaves. Lining it up with Officer progression where you could go from Plt Off to Fg Off, with Flt Lt at OC level. But also consider that Flt Lts should go back to Fg Off when they step down, but could also go up to Sqn Ldr and above if they wanted to assume those posts, are we limiting the NCO stream unfairly and perhaps unintentionally pushing people towards commissioning? What’s the thoughts here?

Agreed completely.

But only whilst in that post.

Then bye bye being valued.

Yet again I find myself asking how the SCC or ACF do things. They are almost certainly doing it better, more efficiently and with more suitable value given to volunteers.
