OASC delay?

Afternoon all, first time poster here and first time I’ve seen the forum! The reason I’m here is because I can’t seem to find answers to my questions so hoping you chaps could give some insight.

I’m an ex cadet of 6 years, loved my time, rose to CWO, big into leadership during my time and took everything I could ACLC, JL and courses at Wing. Went to uni took some time out joined OTC (I know, not the right colour but hey ho) and started my career, things calmed down and I’ve been back involved with the Corps for 12 months. Boss and I have discussed going back into uniform and officer route, sent off paperwork and now waiting on Wing - it would be great to get interviews underway so that we can hit the ground running come the summer. However, there isn’t any information about current process/timelines due to COVID… scouted a little here but there doesn’t seem to be clarity; which is understandable.

Is there a formulated process now or is it still being developed?

Thanks in advance!

JCW

Essentially you sit a Wing Board and then a Regional Board in lieu of OASC. If you pass at Region and HQAC signs it off you’re appointed as an Acting Pilot Officer and have a year to do OIC, which is also virtual at the moment.

Timescales will depend on your Wing and Region - I’ve heard some aren’t doing Teams board for some reason, but mine has been.

Happy to discuss over PM if you want - I’ve just done my regional board so it’s pretty fresh.

Thanks for this - yes, I’ll write you a PM and can discuss further!

Cheers.

Welcome @JCW,

I too recently passed my Region Board, as @MRAR said the selection is primarily done online via interviews with Wing and Region… but before you even think of this you’ll need to get all your paperwork sorted, if you’ve been around 12months I’d assume your DBS has come through, have you started applying for your SC yet?

Thanks - all paperwork is up to date, don’t sweat on that. Process is also underway at Wing - but there has been no comms in regards to process. This helps!

Some Wings have a application tracker on their sharepoint site, to see where you are in the process.

Perhaps yours does, hopefully your OC would be able to point you in the right direction

Jump in quick whilst they are doing the Covid measures!

Recently a CI passed interviews, was commissioned and then passed OIC in around 9 months due to the new format…

Recently having had to wait for OASC etc etc took me nearly 2 years!

So if you can squeak in before they revert back you’ll be sorted in no time.

I’m hoping the new ways of working will stick. Took me about as long as you and I’m told my application was pretty glitch free.

How long before you are made substantive/promoted and what if you have been OIC for well over a year as a CI?

OIC in this context being the ‘Officers Initial Course’ run by the Adult Training Facility at Cranwell not ‘Officer in Charge’.

I believe you are made substantive on completion of OIC, but @anon9987823 may know better than me having recently done it.

Completion of OIC and one year in uniform. Whichever comes later.
Correction, that’s the probation period for gazetting. Confirmed in rank and remove the white tabs after OIC

Beat me to it!

Still a year though the clock starts when you pass OASC or it’s Covid equivalent.

I was told probation is one year or until completion of OIC, whichever is longer, but yes white tabs can go after oic.

When everything is signed off and you’re appointed as Acting Pilot Officer how are you notified? Is it an email? A letter?

I received an email from WHQ via my OC.

I got a letter than HQAC

Great - pot luck then!

Depends on how “on it” your wing are. I got my letter from HQAC and a few days later an email…

My last Commissioning candidate got sent his rank slides through the post a few days before he got his letter from HQAC. :joy:
