Numismatics (Coin & Medal Collecting)

That’s really cool! What’s the lodge name? I assume it’s a founder jewel?

I’ve just got my royal arch one.

It’s Polish National 534. Not just limited to founders, all members get it. I was also in the associated chapter and my PZ jewel has the same device on the ribbon.

If you get the chance to go into RAM they have a lovely jewel

I’m thinning out my collection and here’s one for the medal-heads which could be the foundation of a historical project.

All the Coronation Medals from 1902 to 1953 which include the following:

1902 EVII Coronation Medal (Bronze) (6,054 issued).

1902 EVII Coronation Medal in Silver (3,493 medals issued). This medal was awarded to Henry King who was Secretary to the Coronation Choir in 1902 and again in 1911. Engraved on the reverse: ‘Henry King’. Comes with 2 pages of text mentioning Henry by name and his position.

1902 EVII Coronation Medal in Silver (Mayors and Provosts issue (number issued is unknown but it won’t have been many).

1903 EVII Delhi Durbar Medal (2,567 issued in silver - rare in the UK).

1911 GV Coronation Medal (15,901 medals issued).

1911 GV Delhi Durbar Medal (30,000 medals issued).

1937 GVI Coronation Medal (90,000 issued).

1953 EIIR Coronation Medal (129,037 issued).

Comes in a glass-fronted frame with engraved plate above.

£1,030.00 ono plus postage. Bear in mind that the 1903 Delhi Durbar medal is itself worth just under £400.00 and the 1911 Delhi Durbar medal, approx £100.00.

I also have loads of Jubilee Medals for sale, dating from 1887 available including the 1897 Mayors & Provosts issue (only 512 medals issued).

I really wish I had some disposable cash right now

I’ll take instalments. However, if you miss one, the boys will be round (and I’m sure you know what type of ‘boys’ they’ll be) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:.

Mine are fine.

Farmerdan’s on the other hand…

Sadly probably not worth much after the university years

If the coronation medal for Charles III becomes available before you sell it. Would you add that medal to the display too?

What’s a reasonable price for things like a 1939-1945 star or a War Medal and what sort of things should I be looking for to tell the difference between originals and reproductions?

A genuine 1939-45 Star is around £12-£15 and a War Medal, £10-£12.

I’ve seen very few non-genuine 39-45’s but generally, the lines to the points of a genuine star should be central all the way to the tip. The tips should be sharp enough to dig into your fingers whereas copies tend to be blunt. The central horizontal bar of the ‘E’ on all stars should be shorter than the top and the bottom bars. The ‘V’ and ‘I’ should be joined and theres an indicator on the crown. The central vertical part of the crown should have 4.5 pearls and the left and right arches, 7 pearls each.

I’ve never seen a copy War Medal but I understand that there are rough cast copies out there which are easy to spot. These medals were struck in cupro- nickel and issued unnamed to UK forces but Australian and Canadian variants were struck in silver and had the recipients details impressed on the rim. These types will fetch around £25-£35.

I might have a spare War Medal kicking about if you’re looking for one and I’m fairly certain I’ve got a 39-45 Star. I’m away until 22 November but can have a look when i return.

That’s very interesting.
I guess I thought they would be worth more. Not that I’m looking to sell, but I’ve done my great grandfather’s 1939-45, Africa and Italy stars with defence and war medals (with MiD).

But I guess there were a lot of men under arms at that point, so not exactly uncommon.

The mass issue nature affects the value but for many collectors another problem is that they were issued unnamed so that it’s hard to attribute groups to a specific person.

Did you manage to have a look mate?

Sorry for the late response - yes, I’ve got a spare 1939-45 Star and a War Medal. Both original issue.

Advertised here once more to give ACC medal-heads final dibs before they go to that great auction site on the internet. I’ve finally decided to change my theme to RAF gallantry groups and THEY don’t come cheap!

I’ve bought from Dix Noonan Webb - just be aware that on top of the Hammer Price there is also the Commission to go on and that works out to approx 30% - it shows on the Website how much their commission is. So a MM if you buy it for £300 will actually cost you closer to £400 by time commission goes on

A question for the Medal experts, anyone know what the Green and White one is?
