No it isn’t. Plus an RAF station is “private” land so doesn’t come under the same rules.
Roll up to the line, put the car into neutral, handbrake on. It’s the same as paying with your phone in a drive-thru.
Actually that exemption wouldn’t apply to this sort of thing, it’s very specific that it’s about contactless payments.
However as pointed out above the Road Traffic Act doesn’t apply on MOD property.
…yeah, we’re really getting off track here.
Seriously? If I rock up to the gates of RAF Odiham asking for day passes for cadets they would turn us away. I agree that cadets don’t go that often but it takes a good 5 minutes to get a CI booked in and this won’t be practical and burdens the guardroom unnecessarily.
One place I’ve been that gave cadets passes HMNB Portsmouth.
Our host had organised this in advance and we therefore had no issues and successfully gained access to HMS Prince of Wales
When I was a staff cadet I’d use my 3822 to get unescorted day passes and vehicle passes regularly. It took me about 30 seconds. I was in Lincolnshire and surrounded by about 10 RAF stations, almost every activity I did as a cadet was on one so I had to do it effectively every week🤔
Cadets are escorted anyway though aren’t they? I didn’t think there was any question of that changing, although I might be wrong
From experience of living on RAF stations, kids need ID from 14 - I wasn’t aware this was higher for cadets. To book someone in through the guardroom,(as I have done many times for work, cadets and personal reasons), the person still requires some form of official photo ID - like a driving licence or passport. Having asked my cadets who are unable to get the app, due to their phones being too old or not having one, some don’t have either of those documents either. So I am not trying to over complicate this, I am just trying to work out what to do before I turn up with a minibus full of cadets at my parent station - who ask to see every cadets ID, even when travelling in a vehicle with staff.
We were previously told there would be an alternative - so clearly a need for one was foreseen - I am just asking what that is and how do we get it. I thought this forum was here to help, not attack people asking genuine questions. I am not anti this app - the majority of my cadets have it and are happily using it. I am also not sorry to see the back of 3822’s - less admin is always welcome.
You guys want to try using the CCF ID card - usually results in puzzled looks and scratched heads all round. Not to mention the time I (stupidly) turned up at a station with a mixed CCF group - RN and Army as well - and they made all the RN and Army cadets line up for a photo ID for an escorted badge…
So if they done need passes… why do they need an app as a pass???
So we’ve kinda tried this before then but not quite delivered
Calling it a card is a bit of a stretch. It’s a small piece of paper with a passport photo superglued to it. We gave up trying to use them and sneakily got hold of some 3822 when cadets went on camp.
In which case I’m tempted to start making Sqn versions of 3822s as it’s going to be 5-7 years before we have cadets who will never have been issued them.
See how the app works first but I know what my contingency will be…
So how will that help - RAF stations will have been told not to accept them so you’re just making more admin for yourself, plus wasting paper and money which is exactly why we have stopped using the 3822.
Apologies - The comment was in jest & a bit tongue in cheek.
We’ll see how the app goes but this would probably be the result if it doesn’t work in practise (I.e. it’s not adopted on the ground & people work round it). We will probably find out around Towards the end of the year how effective it is.
Looking forward to reading the reviews on the app store though
Oooooooo good point.
Open to public comment… niiiice.
On the whole the group are here to help and there is a wealth of experiences to tap in to.
You and I are on the same page about the app. I have cadets that will have no problem as they always have the latest phone however, I also have cadets who don’t and we have a few who the Sqn fully funds as we are all they have. This app, although a good idea, does not feel very inclusive for those cadets that don’t have the best start in life and its hard on them. We are going to trial a donate your phone scheme for those families that get upgrades just to try and help those that don’t have.
We need cadets to have an alternative to ID, its not that they need it as ID very often but they need to belong.
Nobody is attacking you.
We don’t know the answer you need, it will hopefully become clear in time, but you don’t need the answer immediately, do you?
All existing cadets should have 3822s, it’s only brand new cadets (who won’t be doing anything for a few months anyway as they go through first class) starting from now who will need the alternative, and again, they don’t need them yet.
Except those who put them through the washing machine There haven’t been any in the system for sometime, so none of my intake who joined in March or those who have lost/washed them this year have them. We go to our parent station and army bases fairly frequently to shoot, so it is already something I need to factor in.
And as @Ex-Everything said, it’s as much about making them feel a part of it all as it is an ID.
Hopefully all will become clear soon.
I think there may be some confusion here - No cadets, other than as I understand a very small set of beta testers, have access to the app. Have your squadron been asked to beta test - If so then surely you’d have a route in to query? The app is generally released at the end of this month in the app stores.
