That’s a bit mad. Does that mean that no one with active public service experience can be a counsellor and help make decisions?
I think the issue is it being the same council.
As an employer of that council, no.
You can’t been seen as being in a position to influence the council (or vice-versa).

Damn, I didn’t know this was a thing tbh.
I do start to wonder if there should be a process for if a cllr is removed from post/ resigns/ dies so soon after an election. Like give it to who ever came second? Let the party who won field another candidate? Not sure. The cost of holding a by-election for a single seat is just huge.
End of Streeting’s career?
Even if he did oust Starmer, he would only be keeping the seat warm until the King of sorry Mayor of Manchester got a seat parliament.

I do think it shows a lot of principle, whether he gets the job or not. Not a huge fan of Streeting, but he met his target today, and has resigned out of principle, so can’t berate him for that

That would only work if they were elected off a party list and not a personal vote. (Otherwise the replacement might have been a rejected candidate from the same ballot paper.)
