I imagine Kier Starmer will be ‘passing’ bricks about the upcoming local elections. What are people’s predictions on what could be a turning point for British politics?
Thought we could only discuss politics on a Sunday to avoid the forum becoming a flame war?
#sundaypolitics
this is a local Election so ultimately won’t change Westminster in the slightest.
Obviously England has seen a decisive swing Right ( to what magnitude I believe I won’t say), but I think the bigger of his worries is the Possible Green- SNP - Plaid- Sinn Fein block.
With the Scottish Greens warming relations with both the SNP and Greens of E&W, and the attitude of co-operation between the SNP and PC, and the talk of a possible SNP Sinn Fein alliance, I wouldn’t be surprised if SKS is worried about losing the Left wing Vote in Scotland and Wales
Also the Scottish Labour Leader alledgely asking Reform UK to work with them definetly doesn’t help their Narrative of
“Indyref2 is in Russias intrest” when Reform is the party of the Russian Propagandist
Not a rule I’ve heard of before, not against it though
Or maybe we can have a politics tab people can opt in or out of
Tried before due to vorderman - started okay but then drifted

I think it’s ended up as one of those unofficial rules to keep the forum generally harmonious & avoid too much pressure on the mods.
Keeping direct political discussions to between 8am & 8pm on Sunday makes it easier for the mods to keep an eye & tends to fit with the themes of the Sunday morning BBC & itv programs.
Happy to give my predictions but in keeping with the unwritten rules of the forum, I’ll wait till Sunday to throw in my two-penith ![]()
I’m surprised being a politics thread that it lasted for as many posts as it did before needing closure!
Interesting result near me, 11 seats contested all won by the Conservatives, took 5 off of Labour and kept 6 of their own.
Reform generally in 2nd place (with a couple of exceptions) but a long way behind.
Badenoch is harmorraging councils across the country and celebrating how that win signals that they’re on the right track.
It’s a win by the local council, despite not because of her.
So far Tories on a net loss of one council, Labour minus 9. We’ll have to wait till later when some of the results where Greens expected to do well come in.
I’m really hoping that the local councillor I deal with at work keeps her seat, she’s really good.
In my home council; Labour have retained control, but have lost seats to both Reform and Greens. The Conservatives have been entirely wiped out.
The council area roughly aligns with a constituency that is usually seen as being a bellwether seat. We’re years away from an election, but this result if copied would suggest Labour would still win Westminster
That’s a big ‘if’, looking at the results nationally.
Very large gains for Reform in Wigan area (24 of the 25 seats contested across the borough but Labour still retain control) = not to be sniffed at.
More than big. I would go with massive.
Saved by only contesting thirds. This is why I’ve always been opposed to elections by thirds: it means a failing council can’t be voted out (in a single election, anyway).
Interesting article in the London Economic, pointing out that while Reform are on track to win 33% of the seats it contested 12 months ago that was 41% which along with polling data suggests they may have peaked. On the other side Labour are likely to lose 50-% of the seats they are contesting, but compared to the last 12 months where they have lost 75% of the seats contested it’s actually not as bad as it could be.
Still bad though….
