BPSS etc

Here’s the form!

The bit you are asking about is actually pretty well detailed in there.

Reference Form – All applicants must provide details of 2 referees (1 x personal and 1 x employer or person of standing) who must complete and sign the reference. Where the BPSS is being carried out on its own both references should cover no less than a 3 year period.

Where the BPSS is being carried out prior to a Counter Terrorist Check (CTC), Security Clearance (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) follow the reference criteria below:

  1. EMPLOYER/LINE MANAGER (x1) - to cover a period of 12 months and to be provided by either:
    · Your current employer or HR Department who is not related to you or a common-law partner
    · Previous employer for the same period who is not related to you or a common-law partner

Should the above criteria not be possible please provide a reference from someone of standing in the community using the appropriate form.

  1. PERSONAL REFERENCE FORM (x1) - to cover a period of 3 years and to be provided by someone of standing in the community e.g. medical practitioner, member of the clergy, teacher, bank manager, civil servant, lawyer, JP, professionally qualified person etc who is not related to you or a common-law partner.

given both of my previous house moves have been of 350 miles, and I’ve lived in both places less than 3 years, technically I don’t even currently know anyone of “professional standing” that meets the criteria either :man_shrugging:

The list of people that is covered by that is pretty extensive, as I just found out as I googled it out of interest. Assuming the same criteria as passport countersigning.

yeh, but the people who’d meet the criteria who I first met more than 3 years ago haven’t even had a need to speak to me for 2 years, so can they really legitimately sign to say they’ve “known” me for more than 3 years?

Hmm, you have me stumped then. I’m guessing you’re not doing SC so both your refs need to be 3 years too.

I guess speak to WHQ and ask what to do  There may be other ways around it that aren’t explicitly mentioned in the main form?

You’ve been a member of here for more than 3 years. And many of us hit the criteria. And have interacted with you. And have met you.

Same here although I have lived in the same house going on 15yrs, I’ve not worked for over 10yrs so I’m going to struggle. I’m not paying £20 for my doctor to be mine so I have no idea what I’m going to do.

Apparently this isn’t actually a thing anymore, unless your doctor is actually a friend of yours. ie if shown phots of people they could say which one is you.

If you work for a government department or hold a security clearance / BPSS elsewhere you may be able to transfer it over, not sure if you’re aware

I have something my departmental manager calls BPSS in emails, but is actually Basic Disclosure, which I assume wouldn’t be enough…?

it sounds like the same thing.

proof that ccw34 sat in front of him is indeed ccw34 based on a DL, passport and/or other forms of ID and references that someone who knows you seconds those IDs as valid

hmm… maybe I can forward it and see if it gets accepted :man_shrugging:

Maybe not, a quick google suggests it’s a Scottish criminal records check

There was a VoV thing that basically said some government departments meet the MOD’s BPSS standards, some don’t, and we don’t know if some do - so get in touch with Sy at HQAC if in doubt (I think).
