You know what really makes me happy?

How?? They’re practically undestructable!

I suppose it all depends on usage. My issued boots last for about 10 years, because I’m basically wearing them in a slightly austere office environment: whereas my shoes need replacing more regularly due to drill.

I imagine someone who wears their shoes in the office but their boots for walking / AT has a very different experience.

That is about the same with me. When you walk 1000km a year on roads a Vibram sole unit will last about 18 months.

Seeing about 300 staff and cadets travel to Sandbach on a damp Autumnal very early morning for the RAF WARMA Winter Walk. Great to see lots of happy smiling cadets getting their medals after the walk.

Gotta say, my current LOWAs have lasted a lot longer than the pair I had while road marching.

Just going through worn soles.

Quick tally of walking events / RM activity this year I’ve clocked up around 900km per year - and I’m expecting to do similar each forthcoming year…

With that in mind, I actually feel pretty good about how much wear I get out of them.

But… I’ve always put off getting them resoled - despite the environmental benefits…

Keeping an eye out on Fleabay, I can “usually” pick up a brand new pair in my size for only about £80/90.

When the cost to just re-sole them is £75 plus postage each way - there’s little financial benefit.

Brand new Altbergs are pretty amazing, straight out the box - and need very little if any breaking in, compared with the old high leg DMS boots we had when I was a cadet.

So close to “I would walk 500 miles - and I would walk 500 more…”

I always get my boots resoled at least once and the heals more. Local cobblers used to have Vibrams in stock but the new owner does not have them so i buy them off ebay. Costs about £60 all in.

I think we had 10 cadets attending - they were presented on the pitch before the game (which they got to watch), & Cambridge won 3 : 0.

Came home this weekend from 9 days away on cadet duty.

Let the wife know i was coming home an hour or two earlier than planned. She turned off the ring doorbell so it wouldnt go off when i got home.

I crept onto the house, and was spotted… then spend 5 minutes being strangled by my kids as they gave the biggest hugs they could.
