You know what really grinds my gears? The Gears Strike Back

Has “our BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Aerospace Studies” actually been confirmed yet? As according to RAFAC Facebook this exists…

I’ve only seen second hand information about his so far…

I know i know…

But emma raducanu getting an MBE for ‘services to tennis’…

Ffs.
Thats

  1. Her job.
  2. What other than play tennis has she done?
  3. She gets paid a fortune to do her job.

The honors system is broken.

Rafac get what, maybe 1 or 2 for the whole org per year. And we give everything, going above and beyond, year after year. Sacrificing many things for for the betterment of the cadets.

G. M. G.

But that’s because we get covered by the Military Honours List.

So is it more a case of the CFs splitting away from Military and having its own stream of awards :man_shrugging:t2:

How is that different to most sports stars who hey honours? An 18 year old going out and winning a Grand Slam is a massive achieving for Britain and will have done a lot for stirring ani heresy in Tennis in young people.

Just moving to the Civil List would probably be an improvement.

Anyone know how many State Awards organisations like the Scouts pick up each year?

Using ctrl-f on the 2022 birthday list gives 7 for scouts, 5 for guides. That was just a quick look.
St John got 3 and they have their own Royal Order as well that they can use to recognise service to St John yet also get state awards

to be fair we also have our own award - the CFM. One “nice” and easy fix would be to allow the use of CFM as a postnominal. BUT when we have cadets getting BEMs for doing less than staff - seen a couple got them for attending virtual parades over COVID.

In that case St John have two. They have the long service award which requires 10 years and 60 hours a year (compared to 12 and 144 for the CFM) plus they have the Order of St John - though to be fair RAFAC staff on the first aid front have been known to be recognised by membership of the Order as well so it’s not strictly limited to members of St John.

Are you sure we’ve had cadets get a BEM for attending virtual parades? I’d be surprised as nothing was made of it on the RAFAC social media at the time.

Really, I’m sure we discussed Cadets getting BEM’s earlier in the year and don’t remember this being mentioned.

For me they should be giving 1 member of Squadron Staff in every Wing a BEM each year. I could easily think of half a dozen members of staff off the top of my head that would meet the criteria. (Stepping into failing units and turning the around etc).

I’d agree. Knowing full well I won’t be on that list so no self interest there

I think this says it all really…

Cllr. Maureen Powell was awarded the British Empire Medal for political service, Maureen has been Chair of Monmouthshire County Council twice, Mayor of Abergavenny and a governor at King Henry VIII School for 13 years. Maureen, who is the Ward Member for Pen-Y-Fal in Abergavenny, is widely known and respected in her community.

Gerald Beaumont of Usk was awarded the British Empire Medal for fundraising which has contributed to improving the lives of hundreds of disabled people across Wales since 2007.

Catherine Spiller received a BEM for instilling dedication, ambition and opportunity in Forces Cadets and Reserves and the community in Monmouth.

Derek Warren of Caldicot also received a British Empire Medal for volunteering and dedicating over 50 years of his life to the No.1 Welsh Wing of the Air Training Corps, supporting young adults in South Wales.

There is kind of a precedent there now with the VR postnominals which you get for 10 years service in the reserves (VR(T) doesn’t count!). But there you just need 10 years, you don’t need to have qualified for the VRSM. If we did introduce this though you’d have all the arguments over does CI time count? What about O18 cadet service?
What would you use? CFM would only work if it was tied to the medal. If we followed the VR approach then it wouldn’t work. CF is already taken by Chaplain to the Forces, so probably CFV or CFAV.
But they’re never going to introduce that!

Wasn’t the whole point of reintroducing the BEM to target those making shorter term impact at a local level, with the MBE still being the target for those doing a lifetime of work towards something especially at a National level.

Not quite.

My bold

And 100% agree.

Even x 2 BEMs per wing per year (1 per honours cycle) would not be out of order or excessive.
There is NO cap on BEMs after all.

Wait until you hear about the House of Lords :flushed:

Perhaps instead of moaning about the allocation of honours, consider writing up deserving candidates? Got to be in it to win it.

Can people nominate individuals in the RAFAC for the civilian list? If so, why aren’t people doing it?

Surely it’ll be a wake up call for HQRAFAC when they see their staff members being recognised significantly more on a list they aren’t directly involved with.

Maybe because those who should be doing the writing up of nominations think they should be the ones being nominated.

Thanks for that advice.
Never thought of that myself.!

In my time i have written up 11 people.
No success with national honours.
Each time gets filtered out as we are in the restricted mil list.

I HAVE however had 3 people get defence commendantions and 6 people 1* or higher.

Sadly the mil list - which we have to use. Holds us back.

I tried a civ BEM app once… was ‘politely’ ordered to retract it.
