well if that is the case there is blood on their hands for not passing it…if it he tries and i really hope he does, amend the gun laws in the USA then he can rest easier knowing he at least tried
One does not simply change the gun laws by trying to pass legislation. As the right to bear arms is in the constitution. Which means something like 2/3 of states need to vote for a change, and by states I mean the senators of the states, not the general public. As Obama tried and he didn’t get close. So the president is going to have to change the culture of the whole country, this is so the states then see voting for no guns as what is right for the culture of the country, rather than the other way around.
Which wouldn’t have made any difference in this case, since that legislation only applies to handguns and to those aged over 21. The shooter was only 18 and used a long barrelled weapon.
The fact that the Supreme Court has now ruled (about 10 years ago) that the 2nd Amendment explicitly applies to the right to self defence has greatly tied the hands of States that want to limit gun ownership and more importantly carriage (especially of Pistols). You now have 25 States that have passed constitutional carry and 13 or so more have “shall issue” policies.
Nope, the first 6 months - one year. After that, the power has gone. Too many of Washington are running their own races after that, you don’t get anything else done.
We should be thankful in the UK we don’t generally have the US ‘gun’ culture following Hungerford and Dunblaine which took weapons out of the hands of the generally law-abiding shooting community, just it left them in the hands of criminal elements. Funnily enough, both sets of documents for the enquiries have been sealed for at least 75 years for some reason. Why is that?
What we have in the UK is something far more accessible than gun, that is knives, only yesterday a 14 yr old was found guilty of murder at Liverpool Crown Court for the murder of 12yr old Ava White in November and last night a 21 yr old in the city was stabbed in the head and beaten with a crow bar and is now in hospital. Schools in my area are having hospital staff teaching children in secondary schools about the damage that knives can do and how to apply basic trauma first aid, instructing them what to do should they come across and/or be involved in a knife incident. Just look at London and the incidence of gang mediated murders where knives are involved.
Remember, cadets can be caught up in these incidents as innocent bystanders.
All true, but it was an example of the trajectory of gun legislation. Also goes part of the way to dispelling the “good guy with a gun” argument, because that loosening of regulations should increase the likelihood of an armed “good guy”.
I’m aware of the Ava White case, many others around the country, and the knife and trauma treatment education. As horrendous and saddening the situation is, we’re not on our x hundredth mass stabbing this year and generally aren’t fretfully awaiting the next news story about multiple victims to one perperator in mere minutes.
Unfortunately since Schools and Colleges aren’t included (you still need a permit) the gun lobby will argue that you’ve eliminated the opportunity for the good guy with a gun. Don’t you just hate those guys!
The numbers are irrelevant these are all senseless killings, regardless of method. I think stabbing someone is a much more cold, cynical, targeted and personal act than randomly shooting in an emotionally detached manner into a crowd. I worry more about our kids (as old as they are) getting stabbed by some low life scum, than I do them getting shot.
Change his weapons to two machete’s. Another stabbing in Liverpool tonight, a 14yr old, fortunately not serious, a 15yr old locked up for a section 47 assault plus a 15 and 17yr old for affray.
in terms of “mass” killings firearms will always win for obvious reasons, but that isn’t to say there are not smaller case incidents with firearms taking place.
I forget the stats now, but I am sure it watched an piece on the news saying 100 people in the USA die each day from guns.
given we don’t hear about these i am going to guess these are single/double victim incidents - much like knife crime in the UK.
I am not saying it is ok that people carry knives, but if 100 people are not dying each day surely that is an improvement and benefit if we accept that knives become an accepted evil…
