Sounds like a job for a Cadet who needs Volunteering for their DofE to me!
A new assessment for first class om LEARN or just fill in the logbook?
A first class assessment on learn would be good.
Bring first class into line with the other subjects.
Voice of reason.
I think I like everything you say and do. Thank you for your hard work!
I personally think their needs to be a serious look taken at how valuable the BTEC is to our Cadets and whether or not itās worth the effort.
Iām not a big fan of the classification syllabus as most long term forum members know and I canāt help but wonder if the BTEC is part of the reason we are still persisting with it at all.
Hugely valuable.
Iām in a particularly academic part of the U.K., and the additional BTECs in aviation and from CVQO are regularly cited as a big reason cadets edge it on sixth form and other further education applications.
Alright Billy big balls!
never said anything about my education, just that the poor sods here have heaps of pressure and are expected to do well!
And to be fair, anywhere a BTEC Level 2 is a GCSE āequivalentāā¦ if you leave cadets with two of the things and an ILM youāre leagues ahead of the competition.
Iām a massive fan of cadet training equating tangible, recognisable, qualificationsā¦
See my post in the training updates thread. Round my way cadets are being told to leave it off HE applications as it lowers their grade average (as they can only get a Pass).
Of course it could be a boost to people applying for jobs & other courses but the universities are being ultra picky this year.
Thatās not what Iām hearing.
If you have two candidates with the average quantity of GCSEs at similar grades, but the cadet has an additional 2 BTECs and several other quals such as St Johns YFA etc, it is an advantage.
It depends hugely on the Uni and the course. Some do say leave it off. Others want to see it because it demonstrates additional breadth and depth of study, demonstrates balancing academic attainment with vocational learning and managing busy extra curricular activities.
To be honest, Iād leave off giving advice on whether or not to include BTEC L2s on UCAS apps to the sixth form advisers embedded in the schools and the HE/admissions staff themselves.
Iād say that is a huge plus (and as an employer Iād value it) but the grade average thing is a tricky one.
Iām not sure though that a BTEC is that significant vs knowing someone has been a cadet and achieved X or Y. But then Iām an āinsiderā and know what we do. If I were looking at an ex ACF cadet for a position Iād be looking at where theyād got to on the star system and their rank, and what they felt theyād got out of their time with Cadets.
But itās only relevant if the uni youāre applying to is interested - itās very much some courses at some universities. Which is why you leave it to the specialist advisers.
Completely agree
And words
How did it go with meeting Pearsons last week?
Iāve often wondered about the whole BTEC stuff since I asked my Staff about it in the past but they basically had no idea - all they knew was that they had to file a request for a certificate and didnāt know how long it could take.
From a Cadet perspective, take a look at Cadet How To Guide #55. If you staff are unsure of how to process it, get them to look at Staff How To Guide #55 or read ACTO 25.
Sorry for the delay in getting back. Initial conversations are positive, but weāve been asked to include the merit and distinction questions in anything we produce at First Class level to match the logbook, which is causing a few challenges. They are harder to mark automatically because of the level of detail required. Nothing we canāt sort though (I hope!)
There are people working on this from both sides who are on holiday at the moment, so will update when we meet again.
