So how do we address this new white tab?
The tab, or the wearer?
This seems to mimic the uniform of the VR(UAS), whereby ‘Officer Cadets’ wear the white tab yet at the same time an RAF Airman’s beret badge. Surely the whole thing just serves to cause more confusion for the parent service when on establishments. Personally, I agree that differentiation between those pre- and post-ATF is a good thing, but would have liked to have seen SNCOs wearing a white band above their existing rank tab, much in the same way that the original ‘Instructor Cadets’ did.
Can anyone upload the new AP1358c here? The ever helpful Ultilearn won’t let me see it because I’ve already registered for it rollseyes
Not sure I can on here, but I’ve dropboxed it;

Did laugh that VR(T) Officers are now authorised to wear great coats too…

GOOD WORK FOLEY!
Does this mean if SNCOs moan enough they will be able to too?
And that’s not actually a Greatcoat, it’s an Officer’s Warm… Can We wear those too?

Oh Lord, I’ve created a monster…
At least there will be no more arguing about whether we can wear the gore-tex jacket.
I thought that was in the last version? oops.
In all seriousness, I don’t see me wearing a greatcoat anytime soon, weather in Devon rarely requires it.
Possibly, but I hadn’t spotted it until now.
Oh God, I’ve been spotted…
Yeah, not even a greatcoat, but such is life. It is quite useful for me in the depths of winter up here, and now it’s actually allowed!
I’ve heard it muted a few times that there will never be a Adult Cpl Rank. I ask why not?
Sgts Mess could be overcome by making them acting Sgts for the course?
This is not to stir trouble, I am generally interested in the mind set.

TBH, I prefer TL’s suggestion of AC(ATC)
I genuinely don’t understand why it doesn’t work that way.

Actually, I agree. The only major argument against this so far has been that it makes life difficult on RAF bases for camps. But seeing as you’re not supposed to go on camps before you pass out of ATF it’s a bit academic isn’t it?
Indeed.
The only issue I can think of is where you’d put the ATC pins? They might have to be LAC (ATC) just to give them a rank-slide.
But seeing as you’re not supposed to go on camps before you pass out of ATF it’s a bit academic isn’t it?
You aren’t supposed to go on camps but you are not excluded completely from military bases. Attendance at multi-day courses or events is still an option.
Auggie ACs spend plenty of time on RAF stations. While under Phase 1 training, troops normally wear a yellow disc behind the cap badge and a ‘rank slide’ that shows which Flight they’re on.
So I guess AC(ATC) would wear a yellow disc and a plain blue slide with ATC pin.
Or they could wear the ‘Trainee’ rank slides that are worn by the ACs who have the misfortune to be doing their Phase 2 at Halton, with ATC pins.
I think we all recognise this isn’t the best way of distinguishing pre/post ATF SGT(ATC)s. I’d suggest that it was done this way as both ATC pins & white tabs are already in the ATC supply chain. All it required was a change to the dress regs.
It’s not perfect but it will work. Most people will only wear them for a few months anyway.

Cpl tapes are already in the supply chain, and more readily available than the white paedo tapes ever were!
I’d be more interested in knowing how many of these Sgts will just completely ignore the new rule and continue to wear their Sgt tapes on squadron, and just swap them over when they go outside the fence - purely because cadets will be confused that Sgt bloggs turned up one night as a Sgt, and then the next night, they came looking like an officer cadet.
This could have been phased in to apply to anyone who was appointed to Sgt from the effective date, with a requirement on any existing NCOs to complete ATF within this year, or lose rank. Thats effectively what happened with officer cadets. Anyone who was a pilot officer pre-ATF kept rank, and anyone appointed the day after was an officer cadet. Simples.
I agree that this should be phased in as suggested those already appointed left alone but with the Clause they Must attend ATF within a specified timescale and those newly appointed given the Tabs.
We have a recently appointed Sgt (an ex JNCO regular with 15 years served)on a neighbouring Squadron who has spent ages sorting out major dress and discipline issues that had long been ignored he has done a brilliant job and watching from the sidelines it appears that he has become widely respected by the Cadets, what will it look like to the cadets when next week he turns up minus his Tapes - tothem it will look like the Corps have no confidence in him.
