One of the best sci-fi series there is imo. I also enjoy that they try to stick to ‘realistic principles’, even if a lot of stuff is over exaggerated unrealistically.

Good qualifier.

Nothing surpasses Firefly and Farscape.

Stargate?
TNG?

Firefly was good.
But its neither of the above.

Farscape… meh.

Farscape has not aged well, which is a shame, and didn’t get as good a finishing film as Firefly did in Serenity. It is however, nowhere near as bad as Babylon 5, which I caught the other day and cannot for the life of me work out why people still pine for it.

Stargate is classic, in all its forms (even Universe!) As long as you resolutely never, ever turn your mind to the question of why everyone in two galaxies speaks English aside from the Russians, and the people on Abydos in the film.

TNG is good, but can be very hit and miss in terms of episode quality, I would personally rate Enterprise above it, controversially.

I wonder if that’s linked to Farscape having a longer run - more plots already developed and resolved or left lingering.

Each is a product of its time, Enterprise was more contemporary and added a fresher perspective on the Star Trek “universe” than all the others which stuck to pretty similar structures and themes just with different settings. I think that sets it apart a little and sets it free from the shackles of being a star trek.

DS9 was another exception which developed a wider range of species and allowed more interesting interactions, but overall wasn’t that strong standalone.

SG1, in the end, suffered much like the various Star Treks did with a rinse and repeat plot cycle.

Farscape, at its time, had a lot going on with a consistent theme and good reveals, a bit of cheese and some reasonable banter for comedic relief (and not forgetting a horny blue alien which I suspect appealed to some). The character interactions felt more natural and less stilted. Plot and relationship development was stronger than more generic franchises. It was arguably a little more ambitious with its physical effects which probably hasn’t helped its aging, and for tone and character traits - unlike the others we’re not necessarily talking about professional and disciplined militaristic characters who are pre-accustomed to such broad special diversity.

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned Lexx in the above Sci Fi series

I liked Universe, never got into Atlantic though… agreed about SG1, once General Hammond retired and Jack/Landry took command of the SGC … I lost interest, as you say repeated storyline.

But nonetheless enjoyed the final 2 straight to DVD movies

I used to get the Stargate Magazine/DVD collection every fortnight, 3 episodes and a magazine

I won all 10 seasons on DVD along with a couple of signed scripts from Sky for voting online for my favourite episode.

I think it got away with it by refreshing the characters, I really enjoyed the addition of Ben Browder to the cast and I think 10 seasons was enough, but it needed Ark of Truth to finish it off as they didn’t resolve the story arc.

Atlantis was alright, but it suffered too much with cast changes, 3 different leaders in 5 seasons was far too many even with Robert Picardo stepping up at the end. The same with Paul Mcgillion being killed off and then brought back. (How he didn’t get the Scotty role in the Star Trek remake I’ll never understand).

I didn’t mind Universe, it was innovative and they had the guts to do something different it just didn’t get enough of a run and the writers strike curtailing season 1 really hurt it (as with The Sarah Connor Chronicles, another great Sci-Fi series cut down as it was getting really good.)

I would tentatively agree with this, TNG was very good, but it had some awful episodes sprinkled in (anyone remember Doctor Crusher having sex with the ghost on the Scottish Planet?). Enterprise was a slow start (as were most versions of Star Trek but Season 4 was amazing and if it hadn’t been cancelled I reckon it would’ve gone to some really interesting places.

Time for Trigger Point! Hopefully as good as the hype.

Finally thought I was ready to watch Four Lives last night. Turns out I was wrong. Binged all 3 episodes into the early hours of this morning. Just about managed the first episode okay, got a little misty during the second but the eyes were most definitely leaking by the end of the third.
