What are you most looking forward to...?

I don’t know, but I’m not sure I’d bet on it…

Both anecdotally, and some of the specialist opinion polling/market research for the hospitality industry I’ve seen, suggests that the overwhelming majority of adults are much more wary of ‘indoors’ stuff than the pictures in the squalid rags suggests: lots of people want to go and see a film, but will baulk at sitting in a room with 200 people. They want to go shopping, but they won’t try clothes on that 5 others have tried on in the last day. people want to go out for a meal, but they’d far prefer to sit outside.

People want to have a holiday, but don’t want to stay in a hotel.

The hospitality businesses around me - and some of which I supply - are all saying the same thing: outdoor good, indoor bad. Camping and glamping are booming, hotels are moneypits - and this isn’t just for bookings for now, this is next summer stuff…

You’re forgetting that as a corps we are knee deep in emergency recovery.
Figures seem to suggest that a loss of between 10% and 15%. Huge attrition.

This will place extra pressure on Sqns and thus fewer available staff for camps.

I expect any increased desire for staff camp places will be more than offset by overall staff loss.

What’s your source?

Speaking to a dozen or more OCs from across the Corps.

All bar none have lost 1 or 2 staff.

When the official figures come out, I expect this loss to be replicated across the Corps.

That’s where.

We’re at none. All of ours are keen to get back with no noises contrary.

I know of one or two elsewhere not expected back, but there are other circumstances in that as well. There’s probably a few I don’t care about thinking about it as well, but I’d be surprised if it’s that high.

We’re a small squadron, the core team are all fine, but 2 staff leaving for sure.

I’ve not lost any from a relatively large team.

We’ve actually gained. A new CI was just finishing the process at the start of the pause and their appointment came through recently.

All has to be taken as averages.

Sqn with only 5 staff loses 1 that’s 20% gone.
Sqn with 20 loses 1 that’s 5%.

I know of Sqns with only 3 staff losing 1…

I’m not here talking about the reasons they are leaving.

It’s just the fact of the matter that the evidence is pointing towards a 10 to 15% loss.

I would be interested to know what our normal annual attrition rate is a Corps. Perhaps this is on par or even less??

Only difference at the minute is for 6 months we havent been able to recruit (as normal) replacement staff.

I can concur with the above that we have yet to lose anyone (staff wise), not sure on the cadets though. Our VPNs interest has massively reduced and we are now down to approximately one per month.

As a team, we all can’t wait to return and get back to doing what we are passionate about.

We were getting between 15 and 20 on vpn. Only 6 tonight… hoping it is just the “school holiday” effect. Only 60% cadets have accessed cadet portal in the past 2 months.

Not a great indication of what’s to come.

It’s a common trajectory from what I’ve been told.

There’s only so much you can deliver via VPN.

Not according to my Wg Cdr or Gp Capt… apparently VPN represents a “limitless opportunity” for future training…

Erm, how many VPNs have they delivered between them… let me count…

As you say @Valiant, VPNs have all but run their course.

We got down to 2…so decided to give up and just see what we walk back into.

It’s depressing planning and organising for 2 cadets out of a 50 headcount

Agreed, I did one tonight and got only two attending. It’s not really worth the effort at that stage.

Most cadets just aren’t interested in VPNs anymore.
They want practical activities, team stuff and excitement.

I am worried about when we return and what your average cadets perspective of the ‘new ways’ will be.
I fear, quite a few will walk once they realise that its unlikely we can do the normal things for another 12,18 or 24 months.

We are doing a return to training brief on Thurs so so will see how many actually attend… Bit worried the limitations (rightly so) may just cause some of them to pack it in.

We are really struggling to actually come up with a covid-19 proof training program that we can actually deliver…the only things I think we could be delivered are only run at wing level.

And if any of my cadets see this - Spoiler Alert
