Webbing or Daysack

I am currently torn between getting a daysack or webbing for camps so I was wondering what you guys think

Are you interested in shooting the L98? If so, you’ll need webbing. If your Sqn or Wg doesn’t have webbing it can lend you or issue then webbing might be the better investment.

Also if I were to get a daysack which type would be the best

I think my wing has webbing but my squadron doesn’t

A daysack is a more practical option for day to day use than webbing. Get that first.

Of the two you have identified, the top one is a better design it seems to me. Too much of the litrage on the black one is taken up with tiny pockets which won’t fit stuff in.

Definitely Day sack first. You can use that for all your cadet activities. Even on shooting days to carry all your layers, food, drinks, etc etc

Webbing is a close 2nd.

Of the two links you shared, I have the second one in MTP.

It’s suits me for range documents and waterproofs, but not much else.

Go with option one.

Agreed option 1, but check it is the BCB one not Kammo as a brand.

One of my Cadets had the BCB one and it seemed decent. Another had some Kammo webbing which wasn’t great.

Mil-tec does both a 20L and 35L daysack quite well made for the price. Worth shopping around. 2 versions laser cut and regular ‘molle’ fabric for adding pouches.

The laser cut looks a bit less military I think if you want to use it outside cadets or for AT.

You can snag an MTP cover for a few quid if you go for a tan or green one.

I’m going to sound like an echo, but, i’d also go with a daysack first as you’ll potentially use it across a range of different activities, rather than webbing… which is harder to justify outside of fieldcraft/shooting (and then, only L98 shooting!).

I’m out of the loop on the rucksack fads and which works/doesn’t work and favoured designs… i’m more likely to carry my kit around in a Bag for life or an Ikea bag depending on the job! If push comes to shove and i have to carry a rucksack, I’ve got a battered old 30litre Munro or an NI pack.

Given the choice of fabrics, i’d opt for Olive or Tan over MTP though.

The current bag de jour appears to be the Berghaus Munro (again).

I have the smaller karrimor SF predator, a very nice daysack, with a few molle loops to add some extra pooches if I am so minded.

Both ally as it gets. Allyness saves lives.

The most important question to answer is can you use a Daysack at night?

but as others have said, Daysack first as is suitable for general use not just one or two activities.

Daysack … you can just get a cheap rucksack to carry your stuff in.

If you want to shoot the L98, you will need webbing or a cadet training vest, and there is no substitute for that. If your Sqn or Wg can provide webbing then just go with that.

We shouldn’t be loading cadets up like mules; if it can’t be carried in the webbing then it’s probably staying at the patrol harbour / admin area, in which case it can be pink for all I care.

Decent webbing is, in my experience, expensive, and I’ve never seen an L98 shoot not take place because webbing isn’t available.

So in webbing which cadets are allowed u der the current ACFTIs…

Your saying you can fit. (Bearing in mind magazine pouches stay empty).

Waterproofs top and bottom.
Warm layer.
2 litres of water.
Lunch
Snacks
Personal first aid kit

Prob other stuff.

Whilst I admire your commitment to pushing shooting at all opportunities.

As general advice to a cadet, if they dont currently have a suitable day sack. That clearly HAS to be the priority.

Considering how much use they will get that from that vs webbing for L98 shooting.

2 posts were split to a new topic: How often do cadets shoot? When did you last shoot?

Don’t forget sleeping bag in the NI pack…

It all depends on what your wing supplies. You may find that webbing and daysacks/bergens are loaned to you for the duration. Be careful if you’re buying webbing though. I might be wrong, but aren’t cadets compelled to wear those cadet direct assault vests now? If you do buy webbing, buy grade 1 or grade 2 DPM. Don’t overspend. Personally, I’d be inclined to invest in a decent G1 or new issue MTP daysack/bergen that you can use across activities.

No, belt kit is allowed and no specific type is specified. There are limits on pouch numbers, it’s in another thread somewhere.

Personal view: cadet vests don’t work that well except perhaps for smaller cadets. I have a couple of them for that reason but most of my year 11 and ups would struggle to get them comfortably on over a smock.

Exception is if you have the ex regular army load carrying vest, rather than the cadet type.

I have the Sabre 30 rather than the Predator 30 (basically the same but without molle loops) and it is a solid bit of kit. Have had it for years. I also have the Predator 45 issue daysack though it is rather large, and probably not needed for most adventures.
