Thermodynamics will always win! It amazed me the people that belive you can chill a room without a vent hose…
But what your want to look at is a ventilation kit of some sort. They should be used even without a cat to help with efficiency. They seal up the gap around the open window to keep the hot air out and cold air in.
They used to have a massive “portable” Air con unit in the robing room at Bristol Crown.
I seemed to be the only person who could fathom how it works. People would walk in, switch it on and not throw the hose out the window.
Or, they’d turn it on and it would do nothing, and they’d moan about it not working. Because the tank was full…
We did. And I refuse to admit my GF was right in that decision.
You can get seal kits to pop the window open whilst having it covered for maximum ACness
Trouble is, if you start off with a high internal house temperature, you can’t use physics to help keep things cool - blackout blinds / curtains on the sunny sides, the open windows over night to cool down. Close windows when temperature starts to increase, blinds down / curtains drawn.
I think it got down to about 20C last night. Already about 26C and we’re expecting 36C today!
But as I’m at work all day, I close all the windows and shutters before leaving, then open everything up just before bed when outside is actually cooler than inside.
Thankfully I have French lessons in 15 mins which is in a classroom with AC 
This is where my house is at now, after having windows & curtains open overnight.
I’m just going around now closing them all and we’ll see where we get to as the week progresses.
We’re forecasting an external temperature of 37c later in the week (happy days!) but during the last heatwave the downstairs didn’t go above 23c.
My forecast initially said 36 tomorrow, but has gone back down to 29!
Thursday looks to be the best day for us.
My parents are currently on holiday in Jamaica and it’s due to be cooler there than here.
I’m just glad my trial this week is in the cold courtroom.

Red warning now issued for midlands
Aye, kid sports day just got cancelled and potentially a school closure altogether on the red days.
Won’t be surprised to see a stop come down for us too.
I would be issuing one anyway for my Sqn.
Wasn’t there a document issued a while back about these new heat warnings? Along the lines of an amber warning requires OC Wing/RC sign off to continue and a red warning is mandatory stop.
As also remember, these warnings are separate to weather warnings. Or did they change it again so these are now weather warnings?
