Ireland had a severe warning with instructions to be inside by 1400
We had the aurora watch here, so I’m assuming this belongs here too:
Looking rough. I wouldn’t be surprised if the coast from Bognor along to Folkestone ends up with an amber warning.
Although, a decent bit of wind might do both those places some good!
Joy… my roof won’t be fixed by then …
That’s going to be a fun commute on the bike…
Storm Benjamin to bring gusty winds and flooding rain to UK on Thursday
The French have now named the storm. The southern half of the UK is only getting the edge of it.
I think there’s still an element of uncertainty. If it runs slightly north, then those of us on the south coast might be in trouble!
Current forecast for me is now winds in excess of 50mph, gusting in excess of 60. Got to drive down to the coast tomorrow, too, so that’ll be fun!
Forecasts for Heathrow & Gatwick aren’t too bad (so far) - Stansted is predicting 30 kts (+ gusts) straight across the runway, which will be close to / out of crosswind limits for some aircraft types.
Top tip for aviators, when we get strong northerly-ish winds in the UK, watch out for Birmingham as a suitable alternate, the runway is more oriented towards the wind than the predominantly east / west configuration of most central / southerly UK airports.
Not sure what it’s like elsewhere, but it doesn’t seem too bad here. Some rain, some wind, and I’ll definitely have a numb face by the time I’ve made the office, but nothing like the levels forecasted.

It’s certainly picking up a bit down here. The peak gusts weren’t expected for us until midday, I think.
This is the nearest weather station to me (around 8km away) observations over the past few hours.
It’s a little blowy, but nothing too serious.
It’s definitely not as bad here as the forecast yesterday had it out to be, although I did think I should have put gloves on when out on the morning dog walk.
This is where a bit of sleuthing can help. We love a good RA in this organisation, and the Met Office warnings are just an RA. Looking at the wind one shows this assessment:
So the chance of it being very bad were unlikely, but if it was bad, but there was a low chance of having a high impact.
Yellow snow warnings often end up in the furthest right and bottom box. As the chances of getting hit are low due to unpredicable forecasting, so there’s a massive area covered by the warning. But if you do get hit, it’ll have a very high impact.
Glad I have not booked a holiday to Jamaica for this half term break. Hope its not as bad as forecast.
Strongest storm of the year closes in on Jamaica with warnings of ‘catastrophic’ conditions
Six yrs ago, we stayed at a resort on the northern coast, flew in / out via Montego Bay.
VERY glad we aren’t there - the airport is forecast to have gusts of over 110 mph!
I reckon Ryan Air would still have a go at a landing…. Can’t be any more bumpy then usual…
This one? Funny ad too!
Forecast has changed - slightly for the worse - winds 75 mph gusting 120 mph!
