Pretty sure they’ve already been run in one region. Just saying.
@WestlandScout The W&W sessions are available on Stream and also on the qualification pathway pages of the AT portal.

Shouldn’t need to re-do you training. Just review the syllabus / skills checklist for any minor changes that might have occurred and get on an assessment.
Yeah I’ve just been sent the links by my RATTO, they are really good, except for the dullard narrating them.
He does waffle a lot, that’s true.
Compass? On my assessment there wasn’t a Compass in sight!
Use of compass is in the skills checklist for LLA, but to quote the MTA terrain guidance:
The navigational demands of routes should be such that the use of the map alone would normally suffice with the compass simply being needed to orientate the map or indicate path direction.
Thanks!
I did want to do the NNAS tutor course before lock down, but couldn’t get the time off work.
If anyone knows of an online version shout.
It’s included within the following syllabus points, so I’d probably expect candidates to be able to demonstrate basic use of it:
e. Find which direction to walk in by orientating the map either in relation to surrounding features or with a compass.
f. Use the compass to determine the direction of a path or feature
I can’t remember it at my assessment but on my training they allowed us to use it to Orientate the Map at the start of the day and if we managed to get confused and needed to re-orientate but that was it.
I took my compass out once on my assessment, but it stayed in my pocket the rest of the weekend.
Not saying I’d necessarily say ‘show me how to do this’ - but if the occasion arose where you had to identify the correct path and couldn’t do so just using orientation of the map, or were unsure, then I’d expect you to crack out the compass to be certain.
Precisely what I used mine for.
Just looked at lowland leader is not listed on the 2021 AT courses. Hill and Moorland and Mountain Leader is. Does anyone know why this is?
I certainly don’t have any interest in ML and am unsure of Hill and Moorland - possibly because I’m unsure if I trust my navigation skills that much!
Also, on a side note, I’ve started planning my first walk! Very excited and hoping to do it at the weekend.
I would assume (and this is only an assumption) that they want LLA to be delivered at a Wing/Region level.
There’s no reason why the MOD should be paying for us to go to Windermere to do LLA when it can be delivered locally!
Which Region are you in? Can point you in the right direction possibly
The navigation requirements for HML are the same as ML, so LLA would be an easier starting point. HML is very versatile though, especially if you’re in southern/mid-England where there’s very little ML terrain, so if you’ve got the time to work towards it, definitely worth doing.
Your assumption would be correct!
Normally region level courses are listed on the HQAC course list as well, or you can search on the mountain training site for them. I suspect the list isn’t up to date now because that planning thing hasn’t really worked for the best part of 18 months
So I can’t figure out how to quote multiple people in replies on my phone so appologies but I’ll reply below!
Thanks JoeBloggs and Redowling. The thought hadn’t even crossed my mind that things could be done more locally. I didn’t even know any AT courses were really done locally as the only thing I’ve applied for got binned due to low numbers and I think the only communication about AT has been the national courses.
I’ve seen on the HQAC calender there are slots listed as X and y region and I did wonder about that!
MRAR - I’m going to change regions some point this year so I’m looking to build up my knowledge first. I also don’t know which region I’ll be going to (a get things are still up in the air).
Grounded- I have no interest in ML - I did one of the Yorkshire 3 peaks a couple of years ago and there was a scramble up some rocks which scared the life out of me! I’m not good with heights. I absolutely appreciate the versatility of the hill one particularly in certain areas, it’s just it offers a lot more scope to actually get lost and I’m not confident in my abilities however saying that, it’s all stuff you can learn and so I’ be keen to do LL and then possibly work up to HML, either the qualification itself or just using that as a benchmark - I’m still unsure if I want to lead groups.
Thanks all!
If this is the calender I’m thinking of that is to show which region has been allocated cadet weeks. If you’re moving to LaSER or SW region I’ll happily help point you in the direction of LLA courses of you can’t find them your self!
Thanks will bear that in mind!
