UK Digital ID discussion

There is already the UK Government Gateway ID scheme used for HMRC & other services. Also, there is GOV.UK One.

I admire your optimism!

As always it appears the idea is good, the framing is bad, I agree that this won’t really help much in terms of illegal immigration.

The right don’t want to fix illegal migration issues. They need it as a distraction.

These people are idiots.

That would be better. I think they know how misleading they are being and do it deliberately.

Simple option

National Insurance Card is made into a formal form of ID &with your NI number creating a portal access.

You would also need to insist that everyone has a an email address so I assume the UK government will start provide an email address for every person

< national insurance >@ukpublic.gov.uk

The cost on server maintenance will be considerable.

Defeats the point of it being digital though, you’d still need to carry a card.

Also, not everyone has a national insurance card :eyes:

I am pretty ambivalent about it. We all give away far more sensitive info online every day and many don’t give it a second thought.

I am unclear how this will stop people working illegally though. Currently people already have to prove a right to work and those who don’t are simply working cash in hand regardless.

Unveiling the announcement, Starmer says “you will not be able to work in the United Kingdom if you do not have digital ID”.

“It’s as simple as that.”

Because the PM Says so

The same man who said they wouldn’t raise National Insurance
Budget 1 contained a National Insurance rise

Preach!

Im just classing this like social security in the US. Again in the US its illegal to not carry an ID at all times.

You need one to live and work there
its almost the same, but on your phone

But social security in the US isn’t meant to be used as ID?

The phone is my main issue, even if I have reservations about the whole thing.
I couldn’t use the COVID app with work due to it’s tracking capabilities

Where is the info being held? Who can access it? I’m required to have a VPN for work, what are the implications
?

This reeks of the online safety act, rushed through, with no thought behind the ramifications of it.

Sweden have a similar thing called a Personnummer like our NI number, follows you around, need it for tax and everything. You need a physical card for it, but if you join the forces for example that’s also your service number.

This has been over complicated.

and as we well know there is never any under the radar, illegal working occurring in the USA ever at all
right?
so that system clearly works

whatever the real reason for the cards, the reasons given (tackling illegal workers/immigration) it is not going to fix so why use that as the published reasoning?

Because admitting it was for social credit scoring, like in China, would be even more unpopular?

First day in the UK? That’s our raison d’ĂȘtre!

If you HAVE to have it, what do you do when the police seize your phone because you were mean to someone online?

And, as was debated when we moved from F3822s to the MyRAFAC app, what happens if the authorities demand to see your digital ID and your phone battery is dead?
