UAS/RPAS (‘Drones’) on squadron

That is ridiculous if true.

There is the easy way, & then there is the RAFAC way… :frowning:

Do what is not, not what is easy

It would seem what is right in this case is also easy…??

So applying Military Aviation rules to non military owned, non military operated, non military maintained, non military contracted, non military manufactured, non mili…

…You get the idea.

That is stupid if true.

Sounds like a job for a thruster who wanted to be in the RAF

Do you think 2FTS will sign off on this ?

Who posts this….

“We do love a good drone at RAFAC”

…. Except when they’re over 250g…… and used outside…… but don’t worry, kids on NASC have done their CAA course to get their Flyer ID, to then go back to squadrons and still not fly drones

Couldn’t make it up.

But it looks good to those outside the organisation, a bit like having the word ‘air’ in RAFAC :man_shrugging:t2:

I’d like to think someone in 2FTS or RAFAC comms / media would know better than to release something using the word drone.

Why? Drone is the word that most of the public would use and it’s a media account.

This, and frankly it’s not about what they’re called, it’s the fact that we do none of it, aside from a select few. In fact there’s an active ban against most drone stuff.

Oh, I don’t know. Maybe the same reason we say rifles rather than ‘guns’, colours or standards rather than ‘flags’, etc. or because the RAF in RAFAC stands for Royal Air Force, maybe, who call them RPAS or UAVs.

RAF Social Media regularly use the phrase Drone in its posts, including when talking about the one the Typhoon shot down.

This debate has been had. We don’t need to rerun it.

Terms of Reference have been published on Sharepoint for for posts with 2FTS for Chief Pilot, Flight Safety Manager and Training & Technical Officer
One step closer to doing Drone Flying within the Air Cadets.

For something any numpty can buy off the shelf and screw around with?

And how are we only now getting posts like this? They seem like the types of role that should have been involved in the last 2 years of procrastination…

Are we setting ourselves up for quick fire policy changes as soon as we launch (or further delays)?

I thought we already had someone who specialised in these things that was re-writing the policy? So now we’re looking at getting someone new, who then needs to settle into post, then write some policy?

Outdoor Drone flying remains paused while work is ongoing to replace ACTO 75 and provide policy on the new governance structures for future RAFAC RPAS/drone training.

That was 21st of March this year. Original ban was mid 2021. This is a farce.

RegAvO LASER was supposedly"working with industry professionals"

  1. Training Requirements. You are to complete the following training, if required:

Maintain mandatory training currency.
Heat Illness Awareness Course (Modules 1 & 2).

I’d like to think some kind of awareness or training around RPAS might be useful too… otherwise you’ll get idiots like me applying for it on the basis that even I meet those training requirements!

I mentioned this within my Teams chat a little while ago with AOC 22 Gp, Cmdt RAFAC & OC 2FTS - “by the end of Sep” or words to that effect.

Reminded OC 2FTS -end of Oct, lots of meeting, blh, blahj, expect things to flow down, more definitive information before Christmas…

My bet is Easter - don’t ask which year!!

On our Sqn, we have been working with cadets to get their CAA Flyer ID, so that whenever the RAFAC protocols are issued, we will hopefully will be ahead of the game.
