UAS/RPAS (‘Drones’) on squadron

But the RAF don’t use that terminology. Ours are RPAS, others are UAVs.

You are right of course - I’ve cut and paste from the RAFAC section of website though.

Sorry, I wasn’t having a go at you as I could see it was a direct quote. I’m just disappointed that terminology so frowned upon is being used on what is now an extension of the RAF website.

On the flip side, it’s terminology that would be more recognisable to parents and potential cadets who aren’t already in military, public services, and aviation circles.

Tailoring a message to your audience is important.

The daily Defence Intelligence OSINT updates (on Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) are also intended for a public audience, yet ‘suicide drones’ are still invariably described as one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles.

Not a problem. I didn’t think you were

RAFAC so far behind the times. SWAMBO has a problem with the roof above her flat, guys sent by the management company, no ladders but just unpacks his drone and a quick look and problem detected.

With the RAFAC stopping drone use, it’s putting cadets being unable to polish their CVs in some industries. The RAFAC should be facilitating drone training even if they have to use CAA approved training companies. In some industries and healthcare, drones are the way forward.

Yes, I know lots of 12 year olds that read those.

A specific demographic within the general public, with limited overlap of our recruitment demographics.

Welcome to marketing, where the same message needs to be delivered differently to attract and be understood by different groups.

Fixed it.

We had similar with our factory roof, drone up, pictures taken, roofers organised - simples.

I have no idea who / where this volunteer*** is, but it does seem that there has been more than a hiatus in getting information / policies updated. Given that this is not a “brand new” activity, with RAFAC being the only provider in the UK, it shouldn’t be that difficult to cobble something together, other organisations are miles ahead.

***Ah, just found the IBN.

I hope that the wheel isn’t being re-invented - ACTO75 should basically say, operate in accordance with the protocols / safety standards / legislation as laid down by BMFA (or whoever) & CAA. List them. Publish.

LASER…. Ofc

Who I gather ARE running drone stuff….

Only on Teams

Of course the next problem that we are going to have to resolve is the type of drone used. Many of us have DJI kit on Squadron, but DJI drones are currently banned by MOD due to security concerns. If we get any approvals to use drones again outside will there be a restriction on the type…

Is that still the case, as it was reported that MOD bought DJI kit in 2022?

This started in mid-2017 I think? Still valid?

Very strange that MOD bought some - unless for 3rd party use.

Yes.

Not for publication on here

Apparently it’s a very complicated policy being put together with industry and regulatory professionals.

Someone I know asked for updates from the LASER RAvO and this was part of the reply.

I fear we’re taking an overzealous route.

It will be open source somewhere - could even be here.

Oh dear, you mean the protocols that are already in existence. :man_facepalming: I hope we aren’t castle building…

From what I’ve seen, they’ve tried to squeeze us into the MAA regulations when we don’t fit any of their categories and massively overcomplicated it.

Just align with BMFA and job done.
