Someone mentioned it maybe should be part of senior/master instead of its own PTS subject. Going down that line, it’d be interesting to know from someone more familiar what the overlap is between the space syllabus and satellite comms.
There is a Rockets module for senior / master anyway. But it’s a bit dated.
I know, and satellite comms.
Good candidates for merging & updating?
That isn’t quite what I meant. I meant it should be more RAF / Defence / operationally relevant, like those subjects (and Air Power) rather than primary school science with little to no military context.
Ah my mistake. But I agree with that too.
There seems to be push back from some quarters on anything military, or even to ‘de-mil’ what we do have. I’ve seen this from squadron and wing staff right up to HQ.
Entirely the wrong direction IMO.
A bit of a google & this seamed to align with the key stage s2 science - so 9 & 10 year olds.
A big jump for 13/14 year olds - perhaps HQAC were thinking on introducing a junior section like the sea cadets.
Our topics should be aligned to key stage 3 at least.
I mean this should be 12/13 year olds, but yeah. I can understand some sort of “levelling the playing field” but a ~4 year difference is a bit mad.
I concur - I use to have this with Air Recce.
Previously taught as spotters blues activity I twisted it to military green activity, covering why we have it & using google earth on uk & Russian airbases to identify the aircraft & then speculate purpose & numbers.
If it doesn’t have a military link then how does it support the core training.
Earliest you can join is 12 & year 8 so already KS3 but your first six months is taken up with first class basic training so the cadets are near enough 13 when the opportunity arises.
Even the Cub Scouts (8-10 year olds) Space activity badge straddles Blue and Bronze, although I can appreciate the depth expected might be different.
How to earn your badge:
Find out about how the Earth moves round the Sun.
Explain how the Sun and the Moon affect night and day and the solar eclipse.
Astronauts have lots of different tasks to do while they’re in space.
Find out about an astronaut, and the skills they learned to become one.
Think about what space travel might look like in the future and share your idea with someone else.
Learn what a satellite is and how they help us to study and protect our planet.
You could share interesting facts about what satellites have discovered about Earth.
Find out about stars and constellations, and how we can view them from Earth.
You could use a telescope or look at some images. Create a model, craft or drawing of a constellation.
Discover what asteroids and comets are, and how they have affected planets in our solar system.
You could look at what happens when an asteroid or comet hits a planet.
Yeah, and Blue generally aligns to First Class.
We teach all the blue badges we can to new intakes alongside 1st class.
We recently had the opposite feedback from the cadets (albeit they were quite vague on what they actually wanted).
Feedback that they don’t want military topics? Send them to the Scouts!
Oh no, that they want more military related activities. Did I misread your post?
Maybe, I was saying we are getting push back from some others in the organisation when we try to align to MOD/wider defence.
To which @Jimothy said he’d received the opposite feedback from cadets.
