It’s not the alcohol, it’s the treating people who are adults like they are children be they Staff or Staff Cadets.
The problem is there are too many idiots out there and we all get tarred with the brush. The majority a drink will be one or two or just soft drinks in a convivial surrounding and there are some and we’ve all seen them who think they are on a mission. So we get a stupid rule because of the few, which sounds like life in general and the basis for laws.
Mind you it’s not as bad as my first few camps where being service run, the bar was open for as long as someone was there and some didn’t see bed until 2 or 3 am. I tried this once. This changed when messes went to contract and bars invariably observed normal hours. Mind you those first few camps prices were a nonsense compared to outside, which encouraged the culture.
When we are on DofE we are rota’d as driver and one other which lets the rest of us do whatever and similarly at camp the DO and one or two additional staff are on duty as well. We’re all happy with this and it works. Mind you on annual camps there are so few staff people just seem to congregate in the ‘office’ or go to their room. Sitting in a bar when you might be the only one is no fun.
We literally did go to the pub with our teachers. maybe that’s where all the bad habits come from haha
The latest Return Guidance Document seems to really grasp how HQAC perceive Staff Cadets
Where the term ‘personnel’ is used this means all RAFAC personnel.
CFAV means adult staff and does not include Staff Cadets.
Cadet includes Staff Cadets unless otherwise stated.
I’m yet to read the document yet, but I find it disappointing that we are treating our adults differently, conversely it’s good that the document is clear in this regard and avoids the grey.
I don’t agree - I think there needs to be a very clear distinction between staff and cadet. We need to know exactly where we are with it. And the advice is crystal clear.
And we are teetering on the old staff cadet/18+ cadet debate.
I agree that a clear delineation in that regard is important. It would be unhelpful if it said “CFAV means adult staff and sometimes staff cadets too, but not at other times…”
It should be a clear line… The fact that I think we’ve got 18+ cadets on the wrong side of that line is a separate issue.
The key is whether what it says actually disempowers staff cadets or not. I don’t know if it does or not.
