Red Arrows relocation to RAF Waddington

I’ve often said the Frecce are a stunt team, the RAFAT are a display team.
Its a different style of flying which comes with a different level of entertainment.

I do get what you’re saying though. Visually the reds are precise but everyone else tend to be entertaining/exciting in comparison accepting the compromise that a degree of precision is missing

This is particularly true:

The blades have a reputation only of exRed pilots and that comes with a level of expectation so why not throw it around?

Seconded.
That year the Thunderbirds visit RIAT a mate timed the duration of empty sky…2 minutes was the longest which is a crazy long time for nothing to be seen during a display

Red Arrow - provisional trg area.

Whilst listed as “potentially suitable” - this doesn’t appear to have been thought out very well for deconfliction! :skull_and_crossbones:

Rubbish - deconfliction is easy!

Reds: Hi. Is this 644?

644: Speaking.

Reds: We’re training today. Hope you don’t have plans.

644: Well, actually, we have a bunch of cadets …
Interrupting
Reds: Thank you for your understanding. Have a great day.
Line goes dead

644: sighs Better cancel again then.

That would be reality if they used Syreston

I remember being on the radio at my gliding club at 15. Red 1 radioed asking if we had gliders up or if they should go the “long way” round to get to Elvington. Had to tell them to go the long way as we had quite a few up at the time.
Though I imagine with a designated training area they wouldn’t be so understanding

Good airmanship on display there.

But yes, different matter asking if you can pass above a civvy gliding site as a one-off vs a somewhat permanent “agreement”.

From this week until 17 April 2023, aircraft from the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team are permitted to train over RAF Syerston.

This is to enable two jets from the team – known as the Synchro Pair – to carry out UK-based training, before the Red Arrows move overseas to complete their traditional pre-season work-up in more settled weather conditions.

RAF Scampton will remain the primary training airspace for the Red Arrows throughout this period, with the team’s home and main operating base being RAF Waddington. The team requires different airspace sites depending on what type of training is needed to be completed.

In accordance with UK regulation, feedback on the activity will be undertaken through electronic communication. Please use the email address below:

I believe the disruption at Syerston will be minimal for gliding ops… 1 or 2 short slots a day if needed.
Re 644 …I guess hardly affected as most of their op’s will be at the weekend …and the Reds don’t practice then!
I think the major problem is the Spectators it will be encouraging there!

Think of the free publicity to 644 Sqn and the spotter opportunities from them! :joy::rofl:

was that not an issue at Scampton?

Yep, but now they will be at Syerston clogging up the A46

Any more pesting and the Red Arrows will be able to train in my back garden…

I still think that the proposed plan B, (move to RAF Wittering and use Cottesmore for display practice), would have made more sense!

What the state are the facilities at Wittering in? It’s not been a flying station since the Harrier force wound down.

Still very much a flying station according to their website and they do have C17s etc in there for exercises.

The synchro single has a nice ring to it

Forgive me if my faith in MOD digital media being upto date isn’t 100%

16 & 115 Sqn, Cambridge UAS and 5 AEF all fly out of Wittering.

Sorry I meant a proper flying station, there is a big difference between operating Tutors and Fast Jets. Have they kept the workshops upto scratch? Have they kept the accommodation fully working? Etc

2MT have one hangar, and Tutors in the Other :man_shrugging:t2:
