Issue with a Typhoon display team would be the same that the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds have - the display is too fast for anything tight and they need huge long passes which would create long gaps where nothing happens.
I’d rather see them get some Tucanos back and have a really dynamic 5-ship display. Would be a hell of a lot cheaper, too.
Interestingly the regulations regarding the restriction only apply when the Aerodrome is open for use by the team. If the aerodrome is shut then it can’t be open for the team & a new navigation order will need be issued.
Just a thought - what’s based at RAF Machrihanish these days?

Why not have them at Cranwell? They’d at least be on hand for all the grad parades.
Nice thought but not many fixed references at sea which the team use to align up with, hence Bournemouth has a RN ship moored at a known location at sea for reference

I’ve often said the Frecce are a stunt team, the RAFAT are a display team.
Its a different style of flying which comes with a different level of entertainment.
I do get what you’re saying though. Visually the reds are precise but everyone else tend to be entertaining/exciting in comparison accepting the compromise that a degree of precision is missing

That year the Thunderbirds visit RIAT a mate timed the duration of empty sky…2 minutes was the longest which is a crazy long time for nothing to be seen during a display

I remember being on the radio at my gliding club at 15. Red 1 radioed asking if we had gliders up or if they should go the “long way” round to get to Elvington. Had to tell them to go the long way as we had quite a few up at the time.
Though I imagine with a designated training area they wouldn’t be so understanding

But yes, different matter asking if you can pass above a civvy gliding site as a one-off vs a somewhat permanent “agreement”.
From this week until 17 April 2023, aircraft from the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team are permitted to train over RAF Syerston.
This is to enable two jets from the team – known as the Synchro Pair – to carry out UK-based training, before the Red Arrows move overseas to complete their traditional pre-season work-up in more settled weather conditions.
RAF Scampton will remain the primary training airspace for the Red Arrows throughout this period, with the team’s home and main operating base being RAF Waddington. The team requires different airspace sites depending on what type of training is needed to be completed.

I believe the disruption at Syerston will be minimal for gliding ops… 1 or 2 short slots a day if needed.
Re 644 …I guess hardly affected as most of their op’s will be at the weekend …and the Reds don’t practice then!
I think the major problem is the Spectators it will be encouraging there!
Think of the free publicity to 644 Sqn and the spotter opportunities from them!

Any more pesting and the Red Arrows will be able to train in my back garden…
I still think that the proposed plan B, (move to RAF Wittering and use Cottesmore for display practice), would have made more sense!
What the state are the facilities at Wittering in? It’s not been a flying station since the Harrier force wound down.
