Preparing to Return to F2F Activity... Again/Still

Let’s not forget that Sept isn’t too bad for outside stuff, but October onwards when it’s wet/cold/dark from 1900-2100…

Ohhh… Socially distanced aircraft recce projected against the minibus from inside the building… Using umbrellas to protect against rain.

I think you might have misread the word “fun” there. Air recce has never been and will never be fun.

I think the answer on a postcard, as unpalatable as it might be, is it’s not feasible to re-open under these restrictions given the additional extra burden on the 2 CFAV running a night…

Think you might be right there.

But by September things may look different again - which means this document may have been released a little prematurely if it is labelled as “final”…

I would feel more comfortable if they called it a “living document” so we can amend it as we go and as advice changes immediately react.

There’s a danger here that this risk assessment and checklist will be out of date before we hit 01/09

Also, as loathe as I am to say it there is a logic to waiting a week or two after schools go back before we re-open… This gives nervous parents two weeks of getting used to their offspring being with their mates all day, in what we all know will become a largely uncontrolled environment…

I imagine the news will be all over it for the first two weeks - where parents are saying they are keeping kids at home as they don’t trust the school… Let the schools sort out attendance and slap parents with no legitimate excuse* for keeping the kids at home with fines… Then once that settles down coming back to cadets won’t feel like that big a deal as everyone will be back at school anyway.

  • some may feel covid-fear is a legitimate excuse, but the govt. have been clear that it won’t be seen as such.

what about the kids that are classed as vunerable? we have a cadet who is classed as such and in our “what are your intentions when F2F resumes” survey we under took its detailed that the cadet in question isnt sure returning is the right thing for her given her medical issues…

This doc will/should be amended dozens of times before we get anywhere near going back in so I don’t feel any real need to get too stressed out yet. Lets see what the guidance is when we finally get permission to enter buildings again

At the end of the day we will end up following whatever rules/guidelines that the schools will operate under and be expected to mirror them - so 2 weeks behind is a good aiming point

That’s before you factor in all of the individual unit issues that this one size fits all doc does not cover and the obvious inconsistencies that have already been highlighted

Sorry I’m not sure I understand your comment @AlexCorbin?

For those that are vulnerable or have a medical reason to not to return to school certainly shouldn’t be returning to cadets either. I assume the govt. and the school would support them in continued home learning should this be on the advise from their medical professional.

I was speaking in more general terms of otherwise healthy kids that concerned parents may try to keep out of school for no good reason other than they are worried about them getting Covid… Which if they are not in a shielding category the education secretary has already said they’d be fully expecting to return in Sept, or receive a fine.

I believe the HOPE is that the time we start the 15 limit is 30.

But by starting the checklist now we arent wasting time waiting for the improved numbers.

this is my thoughts.

4 months ago (middle of March) this was something that was protected against by a national campaign indicating we should be singing happy birthday twice when washing our hands.

September is still 6 weeks away, realistically 2 months away if we wait for school to return to their “normal routine” (or whatever that may look like).

ie half the time we’ve been in lockdown again is still ahead of us before we can/will return to F2F.
put another way - we’re 2 thirds of the way through this pandemic, consider what has happened so far, the rate of change - can we realistically say we can predict what the remaining third will look like?

a lot has happened in the last 4 months, even more in the last two, with the peak being reached and infection and death rates dropping.

I am not suggesting give it two months and Covid-19 will be a distant memory, nor that this will disappear as quickly as it appeared, but September is still a long way off given the rate of change we have seen in the last 6-8 weeks…

But now with things opening up people will be looking for problems like Leicester, which surprised me as much as the sun rising in the east. The pattern will be individual towns, boroughs, cities get locked down, and we will be in and out of lock downs all over the place requiring some statistical measure to be attained before not being restricted which will just create mayhem. I can’t see the govt messing around in the future, they have got the taste for blood now and the legislation is on the books. Although lord knows what happens when you add in the responses from those devolved.

I notice from Twitter that the ACF are off climbing hills in the Lakes - and they did a nationwide ‘sleep out in your garden’ thing a couple of months ago.

Some of you may recall my less than entirely complementary review of my experiences of the ACF, but they are getting out and about, doing fun stuff (as well as online stuff), so why aren’t we?

Why is this document being shared individually by some wings, rather than having a central, version controlled document!?

Particularly if this is meant to be evolving, a clear latest version is important and should be accessible to everyone.

I received a copy of the document late this afternoon from our Wing Co. RFCA have supposedly been given the date of 1st September to have buildings 'released after which staff will be allowed entry to start the checklist. Realistically can’t see us being back running any F2F until October time.

As long as they use track changes. Unlike DfE.

Yep, make it an ACP and stick it in key documents so we can centrally track changes!

This is what I really want! As I said above, Mountain Training have given loads of advice and info about what can/can’t happen. Same goes for the other NGBs. I see no reason why we can’t follow that advice and start doing some outdoors stuff that doesn’t require use of the squadron building.

Hell, we’re lucky enough to have access to a shed load of decent tents, we could run DofE expeds and let each kid have their own tent (obviously we’d be creative with what they’re carrying), but it would be a massive kudos to us as an organisation to be able to get that back underway.

I’ve certainly seen on a couple of freelance pages that some people are doing exactly that!

Mountain Training have effectively said that courses can be delivered again as long as social distancing is compiled with.

So no real reason we can’t have LLA, HML or even ML courses out.
