Places we’d rather live than the UK

Inspired by the post from @Horriblelittletechie linking to a 5 bedroom Swedish villa for less than the price of a garden shed in Blighty, where would you go?

We’ve accepted an offer on the house we own here and currently going through the sales process. So next month’s trip to visit family is probably going to be a house hunting mission disguised as a holiday.

New Zealand wins hands down for me

I love NZ, having previously lived there, but their housing market makes ours look tame.

In spite of the issues you read about in the news, I’m actually quite happy where I am. Especially when I get to head up to altitude.

Id also pick sweden.

Such a well run country. People are great. Also in the EU so travel isnt a ballache.

Following that Canada.

If i was single i would of banged out of the UK 3 or 4 years ago.

I have friends in Oz and NZ who love it there but cost of living is making them consider coming home

I’d love to live in or very near the Alps. But realistically, I’m not going to learn a language. So next best for me would be Western Canada. I’ve never actually been, but BC has some fantastic land scapes and environments from what I have seen. And Canadians always seem pretty nice.

Living somewhere like Vancouver but having pretty easy access to the mountains would be great!

When i was in Ontario everyone i was working with loved living in Canada but would rather live kn Vancouver. Its meant to be incredible. Its added onto my visit list

About as affordable as London unfortunately

Less so tbh.

Well, i might be biased but i agree

Slovenia took my heart.

A quick look it appears I can earn about twice as much, but houses are about twice the price, so, similar affordability in that sense!

These are the main towns of the area we are looking at moving to…

Worryingly, some of the town we have looked at are not even on this list. So the area is pretty sparsely populated.

So the biggest place is a similar size to Haywards Heath, but, with nothing else around. This sounds like it would be both a fantastic thing and also not great!

Retirement to Rural Ireland is currently the plan, moving their to work isn’t on the cards as I’m not bilingual and she would have to take a considerable drop in banding.

All a bit different now we have the little one as she will grow up here and will be around 20 when we retire, can’t see her wanting to abandon the UK for that!

Channel Islands, such as Jersey and transfer to the police there, they don’t even wear stab vests if they don’t want to!

To be fair, that’s how I currently live. But a takeaway is only a half hour drive away when needed! It looks like living in Sveg would be somewhat more remote, overall.

Inspired by this thread, I found myself scrolling through farms and small holdings between Bantry and Tralee in South West Ireland (another beautiful area I’d consider zipping off to). If we sold up here, our 20acres plus house could buy 150acres, 2 large barns, multiple outbuildings, 2 farm worker cottages and a manor house… which seems like a significant uplift for a retirement plan!

So. I’ll see you guys later! Byeeeeeee!!
