Numismatics (Coin & Medal Collecting)

Would have thought pinned anything would pose a FOD issue :man_shrugging:t2:

But when they were near planes they’d be in grow bags

I still have this photo of the proof of concept. Can’t imagine why it didn’t take hold…

They could have presented it better.

I hope they revisit it. Having worked with many international partners, I think we might actually be the odd ones out for not wearing ribbons in working dress.

It doesn’t look as bad as I was expecting.

Do aircrew and similar tend to have things like ribbons embroidered onto Velcro badges for grow bags etc?

Name badges, weapons courses/QWI, wings.

Depending on what they fly, sometimes name badge and wings are combined onto one badge.

Have never seen ribbons etc, even in Velcro patch form.

But I agree with you. It looks very smart.

The main issue would be providing better-quality shirts.

Got some more medals to dispose of if anyone’s interested?

3 x RAF LSGC’s - GV, GIV & EIIR. The GV issue has the rank of SM2.
2 x Air Efficiency Awards - GVI & EIIR, both RAFVR.
Royal Observer Corps LS Medal - EIIR (entitled WW1 pair (Army), transferred to RAF and then deserted, with research).
2 x CFM’s - GVI & EIIR.
MBE (Civil) and CFM to former VR(T) officer from GMW. 50+ years of service.

If no interest here, off they’ll pop to that well-known auction site.

Hi, does anyone know what this medal is?

It looks like a Burundi UN, but the proportions are out.

Just clearing stuff out as I have a bunch of clutter. Found this and honestly have no idea where it’s come from.

I had a set of those when I were a lad…

Got them from Shell Petrol Stations with fuel - more fun than rubbish glasses or soup bowls

Not sure if these belong here?

RAF Shooting Competition coin/medal awarded to my granddad, an RAF WO armourer.

I don’t collect coins at all but I reckon I might’ve picked them up at some car boot sale or charity shop ages ago.

That’s pretty cool!

Boys Inter Flight Cup - Winners 1923-24 - Boy CC Willot

Boy Willott went on to do rather well, winning The King’s Prize at the first post war Imperial Meeting in 1946 and the Queen’s Medal for the Champion Shot of the RAF in 1956. The only competitor to win both.

Given his dates of service, the medal above is probably the first shooting award “Bill” Willott won.

New medal designs with the King on have been announced. Six new award designs featuring The King’s image are revealed - GOV.UK

The Cadet Forces Medal will have this one.

Why is it that some medals the King has a crown on his head and some do not, why is he facing right in some and left in others and why are some head and shoulders and others heads only?
Is there a reason for this or is it a design choice?

By convention I think he’s supposed to be facing right, as Her Late Majesty faced left. It’s explained within the article that he’s facing left on the sS medals so that his medals can be seen.

As for crowns, it’s always puzzled me that Her Late Majesty wears the full St Edward’s (coronation) crown on my Iraq, Golden Jubilee, and Volunteer Reserve Service medals but what looks more like a tiara on the Diamond and Platinum jubilee medals. I always thought uncrowned effigies were just for the likes of Edward VIII, who was never coronated, but I’m clearly wrong on that point.

Uncrowned examples for the war medals.

And then different crown for the late queen for the GSM’62.

Just different designs I guess. I quite like the new designs. Going to have some real variety in racks going forward.

Just realised Her Late Majesty is facing right on all my medals and not left as previously stated. Does that mean His Majesty should be facing left on all of them (as he does on the Coronation Medal)? Or is that convention just for stamps, or coins, or not a convention at all?

Bling has always appealed to me. Clearly a bit of a magpie.

What are the coolest medal racks you’ve seen/got and what makes them so?

I wonder what the coolest medal racks are in the reserves and cadets forces are (and again, what makes them so)…

Would a VC be worth more or less because it was suddenly unusually paired with something random like a CFM?
