New No.8 WHT

Anyone else seen the ‘new’ WHT posted on sharepoint today. New questions asking on care and cleaning plus some other minor changes.

just seen it.

nice to have included questions on cleaning which in the past has been taught but never tested.
seems a shame not to inlcude removal of the bolt, of by the very least what should be check on the boat and rifle before fitting (ie serial number)

“Keeping the muzzle pointing in such a direction that no damage will arise in the event of an accidental discharge” seems a bit poorly worded… how about ‘safest direction’?

Pretty sure in the event of an indoor ND something’s going to get damaged!

Also, why is PAM21C, PAM5C, etc in a new folder called ‘shooting documents’ instead of being in the folder with ‘PAM’ in the title? No wonder I couldn’t find them the other day…

Also. Just before the load, No ammunition is to be used.

As im only a Cadet, can someone bulllet point the changes please, as im unsure when i’ll next be able to do any weapons training. thank you very much.

Assuming you have the same one we do (it sounds the same!) there are no changes worth mentioning. There are a few questions on cleaning at the end.

i would hope this was obvious…or is it trying to say the use of snap caps should not be used but without actually saying it…?
i have used snap caps in the part and see reason why they shouldnt be used…

i use snap caps, as it helps them remember to carry on, otherwise they just lie there looking silly.

It IS worth mentioning the bolt is closed an the SAFETY CATCH IS APPLIED … Twice…

I was told that no ammunition is to be used including the use of snap caps, partly because people over use them and leave bits of Brocken plastic in the rifle

so as mentioned i mentioned in the new L98A2 WHT thread…what do we do with those Cadets who have held/hold a valid WHT when it comes to expiry? do they need reteaching?

i am sure there is a fair proportion of No8 shooters, not to mention Staff, who conducted their training 3 years ago or even further who may not be able to answer the new questions given the time passed since training and not been tested on such matters since…

Then re-train them!

If they can’t pass the WHT then they can’t shoot, simples!

They could have updated the what must you not do with a misfired .22 round though, which considering the precise answer required is a terribly phrased question.

I intend to run a session for all qualified on L98 to update them on the changes and to teach lesson 8 to them all
And now I will run a session on the differences in the wht and the the significance of the questions related to care and cleaning

I am testing according to the latest versions but explaining the changes first so everyone will be updated as I go along

You must have a different test to us then. Ours is almost the same as the one in the old Pam 21-C, but with slightly different wording and some extra cleaning questions at the end. The only time our test specifies that the person taking the test must apply the safety catch is after the load.

I thikn he’s referring to the instructor having to close the bolt and apply the safety catch prior to the two Safety tests.

Ah yes I see. Not really earth shattering from Tricky’s perspective though.

yes, its specifically been changed from not applying the safety catch to the instructor closing the bolt and applying the safety catch, its an important change…

pretty much, we need to evolve with the times, just like with any new drill or uniform order. Retrain & retest.

What will be interesting is the other new doc released by HQAC about firing from other positions, as it is going to be included in the new RCO courses, for those who are already got RCO, would we need to do a conversion to prove that we are competent?

They will need to be retaught the changed lessons, but it shouldn’t take too long as they have already done the old version. There is no pressing need to actually retest them until their WHT runs out. If you don’t reteach them they will make mistakes during the WHT.

Stop putting ideas into their head! Besides, as an RCO, you should be current and competent in the weapon system being used - which will include the different firing positions. If you haven’t been trained on them, then seek out some training.
