So bringing this back on topic; what actions can the org take to ensure a better experience next time?

My thoughts;

  1. Send a feedback form out to those cadets in attendance AND ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY SAY.

  2. Organisers must do a debrief noting what’s gone well and what hasn’t from their perspective.

  3. Combine the 2 activities to identify strengths & weaknesses.

  4. Create an action list to secure the good and change the bad, with delegated authority for the taskings, completion dates and quality criteria attached.

Dont forget to ask the escorting staff as we’ll as they have some poignant points to raise

Apologies for misquoting, but it does not set a bad example as long as all safety measures were taken. If you ever in that position just ask and we will demonstrate it is safe if required, please just dont make it out to he bad practice when it isnt.

That is a difficult question to answer. Different types of activities may have different requirements depending on what is written in the document that governs it i.e. Cadet Training Ranges etc. For generic activities, we are supposed to have one adult per 10 cadets, minimum 2 adults. Experience of the cadets and adults and type of training also has to be taken into account, and it is a “should”, not a “must”. If you have 30 senior cadets doing drill, for example, I doubt anyone would bat an eye if there were only 2 (experienced) instructors there.

All activities are supposed to have a nominated first aider, though most adults have at least an EFAW qualification. EFAW is what is required to be the nominated first aider for most activities outside of a range environment. The default in my county is for all adults to do FAW & TQ so they can be first aiders on a range.

One interesting observation apart from the other hundred or so appalling mis-managements seen during the day.

Storm trooper-esque first aiders walking around cadets, some supervised by other staff, forcing them to get out water bottles and drink. ‘I am not leaving here until I have seen you drink from that bottle.’

The cadets that were flown in would have to be flown out again… a lot of AEF time for a minority !

Not necessarily, could get a coach for the return journey :wink:

Exactly, fly them in. Those from the furthest regions could fly out again (SNI), the rest wpuld go back by coach

Combine it with Nijmegen training, 4 days to march home!
