Moving to Bluesky app, escaping Twitter

Has anyone joined or looked at joining Bluesky https://bsky.app/ and abandoning X/Twitter. X seems to be a cesspool of views now and the US election result isn’t going to improve things I expect.

Someone’s already taken RAFAC on there, but perhaps RAFAC should be moving away from X to somewhere, well frankly, safer.

I just love without that type of social media these days, abandoned Twitter long before the Bond Villain took it on.

That’s probably the healthiest approach! There are some interesting conversations sometimes though (or there used to be!)

I use X mostly to see what other peoples views are on things, it is guaranteed to have such varying views compared to the narrow friend group I have on Faceache and the image obsessed insta.

Personally I don’t really see the value of being on Twitter/X for RAFAC.

Facebook - Parents and local communities
Instagram/TikTok - Young People (Yes I know we shouldn’t be using TikTok)
LinkedIn - Higher Level corporate engagement

Precisely how I view things.

Twitter (which now identifies as X) has lost its USP. It used to be really good for getting in touch with celebrities and companies, but better channels now exist without the in-built hate.

Can’t remember exactly when I left Twitter, but it was a while ago.

One of the few things David Cameron was right about; too many tweets make a…

I’ve moved to Blue sky - though much more interesting is that MOD are moving their official and unit accounts to Bluesky.

No one wants to be on Dur Stürmer

Never heard of blue sky. Suspect it will be like threads and other attempts to replace Twitter / X (the only one of these platforms to take an even-handed approach on free speech / hate speech).

No, BlueSky is picking up momentum.

For the moment, at least, many with a following are seeing more and/or better engagement there than on X, despite having more followers and a longer history on X.

In time though, it may degen to just another SM cesspool.

Blue sky is a little no man sky at the mo

Various different accounts but not connected so it’s a bit frontier and not got the feed /vitality of twitter.

But on the plus side it’s not as vexatious as twitter has become

I find that blocking key words helps to curate the X thread really well. I don’t really get any stuff I am not interested in.

I haven’t done anything that technical, but blocking certain accounts certainly improved my feed.

My twitter feed has dropped to about 10% of what it was 6 months ago.

My feed was set to ‘following’, not ‘for you’, I don’t follow hate mongers so I don’t see their stuff, I’ve not blocked many - Musk, obviously… - nor have I blocked particular hashtags, but most of the people I follow: academics, history/archeology, defence and foreign policy, and folk who are either still in, or retired, have stopped posting or left completely.

I reckon that about 75% of the people I was following on twitter are now on blue sky.

My advice? Leave Twitter entirely.

I was really active on there until Lent 2022, when I gave it up for Lent and the improvement in my life was so great I have never gone back on. I was never on other social media so I am now officially a Luddite. I read books now!

I’ve seen a handful of CCF Army cadets putting make up on wearing greens talking bout what they are doing and even mentioning where they are based etc. I’ve told them its not the best place to be advertising where you live and where your Sqn is. I’ve even been blocked by one account. Guess their section needs education on social media.

Alot of my cadets know I use TikTok and I’m forever educating them not to disclose any info online. So far I haven’t had any cadets pop into my lives and engage in communications as they would be blocked.

I do have a BlueSky account but I’m yet to post anything on there. I still have a Twitter but I rarely open than app.

It doesn’t matter what you think you’re not disclosing if TikTok is on your device. Why do you think it’s so good at identifying what videos you want to see?

I was talking about young female army cadets getting ready with their uniform on saying where their building is and what time they will be leaving etc while doing a live stream, as they do not know who they are talking to.
And it knows what videos I like from watching the video, liking the video. It gets an idea of the videos I don’t like by me clicking not interested or blocking that page entirely

A very relevant new article

Not just that. It knows what you’re saying whenever you have your phone with you, where you go, what other apps you use, browser history, etc, etc.

But so do loads of apps, and the phone it’s self. The worry with TikTok is that it’s supposedly feeding that data back to China.
