Can hardly bail him back to Liverpool
He’ll end up at the end of this with a. Hospital order under S37 of the MHA.
They’re not running unfitness it seems.
He is in Belmarsh, so they must have been really worried about even locking him up locally.
He is pleading “not guilty”
When you throw that many charges at someone whats to lose in giving not-guilty a go?
Credit becomes worthless after a point, may as well gamble.
Trial has started today at Liverpool Crown Court.
Jury selected 14 out of a potential pool of 73, two will be discharged probably tomorrow following the prosecutions opening statement. The jury have now been sent home whilst legal arguments to the court proceed this afternoon. Case starts tomorrow morning at 10:30 under His Honour Judge Menary
I’ll be intrigued to follow along with this one. I thought I had an opinion, but want to read the details before sticking to it.
Liverpool Echo has a very good court reporting system, usually they are very good and will be following this trial. They give live updates as the court is sitting.
I’ve blocked the Manc Echo from showing up. I find their general reports of goings on around here are nothing more than inflated words for views. Making bland stories way longer and still just as bland.
The actual court reporting live is normally very good, the rest I agree is poor to abysmal.
He has just plead guilty it seems
Damn. Not what I expected at all.
It will be interesting to see what the pre-sentencing reports state. His Honour judge Menury has stated he should expect a considerable period of incarceration.
Is it possible that the defence could put forward a defence of diminished responsibility in mitigation to the length of sentence or even a hospital order?
Left it a bit late hasn’t he? @Baldrick am I right in thinking that he won’t get any discount for the guilty plea since he’s left it so late?
No. Those don’t apply after plea.
He’ll get a smidge. Maybe as much as 10%, because no one gave evidence.
while i know nothing about sentencing and duration does 21 years seem like a long time?
no one was killed, although more by luck than judgement - i am not sure what would be “acceptable” to me but 21 years is longer than i expected…
…is this a case of multiple incidents all carrying a few years combining so cumulatively it is 21 years?
I imagine intent played a part. It wasn’t an accident, he admitted doing it out of anger.
