Just seen the footage of the car in Liverpool, looks absolutely horrendous. Hope everyone’s alright.
Not seen any footage, but you can tell just from the ariel shots that it’s carnage down there. Really hoping no one’s been seriously hurt. Also hoping this is just an idiot driver rather than a pre-planned attack.
The police have emphasised it was a white man they arrested. Need to in order to prevent the social media lynch mobs again.
Too late from what I’ve seen online already.
Have now seen footage. I think my hope for no serious injuries is sadly unlikely.
Yup, even with the police saying that, you get this:
But, it really goes to show these people really don’t actually care about what’s going on. They just look for any excuse to be racist.
A colleague’s boyfriend is up there for the parade. He’s not been answering his phone…
Turns out he’s just in the pub drunk and has no clue the panic he has caused.
Looks like most people there are very drunk from the footage. Certainly making the first responders time harder than it needed to be.
My mate was like that at Borough Market, was steaming and then pulled, rocked up home at 06:00 with a flat phone to everyone sitting in the living room worried.
This is looking more and more similar to one that happened in America a while ago, where a driver ended up a closed road. Beeped their horn at people to move, then got surrounded by a mob and just put their foot down when someone tried to open their door.
Hospitals deployed major incident plans, numerous children reported to have gone to Alder Hey. Just awaiting Merseyside Police press conference.
Strange, he was able to drive into Water Street past the Town Hall, which is downhill to the Strand. I would have thought that the police would have closed Dale Street to stop traffic.
I don’t know the geography, but for an event like this in London they would have HVM’s in place and would lift anything parked inside.
Depends on how big a footprint they had pedestrianised I suppose and what form the road closures took. Plus who was responsible for the TMO, certainly we would push this sort of thing onto the Local Authority or the Club to take primacy.
Thankfully, it appears no one has been killed. Given the footage, that seems like a small miracle. But still very sad to hear how many injuries there have been, including children.
27 to four hospitals, 1 child seriously ill at Alder Hey. Others have self presented at hospitals. 4 were trapped under a car.
Luckily at the moment there have been no deaths.
Pretty horrific all in And somehow, it looks like it might have ‘just’ been a serious road rage incident of sorts, rather than a targeted attack.
Based on the footage I would take that as a win, I was sure we were going to end up with fatalities.
What I’ve seen in the videos online supports what you said earlier, someone driving where he shouldn’t has hit someone or someone’s, crowd has reacted and he’s put his foot down in a panic to try and get away. (Early days though so best not to speculate too much).
Does this need a thread split?
47 in total casualties, with 23 triaged at the scene when they took a restaurant over as a medical centre.
ETA the Times reports that the driver was apparently intoxicated, strange if that’s true, why didn’t the ACC say so at the press conference ?
Yep, I’ve just seen similar. Appears the road there wasn’t closed, he was one of multiple cars on the road. Got into an argument, then some supporters start banging on his car and kicking it, smashing his rear wiper etc which in the end leads to him trying to drive off at speed.
Not defending what he’s done at all, in case that wasn’t clear!
I would assume that they will save that until they have evidence to charge with the offence. Looks bad to say in the press conference that he’s drunk and then he blows under (or more likely bloods).
The local police station for the city centre is less than 3 miles away on the outside of the centre, which is a major custody suite. 4 hours between arrest and press conference, much time to get him to blow a specimen and do a drug wipe. They are going to need that evidence to decide whether to bail him.
