Letter to Prospective Civ Com Members

Hi all,

Does anybody have a letter they use to recruit new civilian committee members?

We have our AGM in 2 weeks, and I would like to invite along ex cadets, association members and parents to attend the event in the hopes of boosting our small number of members.

Much appreciated,
Mike

I’ll be making one in the next few weeks, for similar reasons.

I’ll post it on this thread when it’s finished.

Me to please I need more for my sqn committee

Isnt it the committees’ job to do this…?

We’re trying to recruit some committee members that WILL do jobs like this!

You mean you don’t suffer from the usual ask for them to do something, and then do it yourself when after a further two meetings its not happened…

I’ve compiled and been granted two lottery grants and done the Gift Aid registration because I get nothing from them! Jeese, I should be a Civ Com Chairman…

Don’t forget to contact your local Volunteer Bureau. They are normally overflowing with busy body’s looking to sit on committees and dictate what you can/cannot do!

One which I recently heard which might talk to the OC about is getting the local RAFA/RBL involved - the Sqn involved did a presentation on what the ATC does to the old boys and 3 of them volunteer to sit on the committee (with a further handful offering to help out with interest talks about their very, very long lives).

We have the local RAFA chairman on our committee.

Maybe the letter could include the Thurston Squadron FOI request as an enclosure, entitled ‘Please don’t do this’.

I’ve just affiliated us to the RBL and part of the deal was they can/will send people to committee meetings.

Likewise we have members of both the local RAFA & RBL.

This nearly made me spit my tea all over my work keyboard!

I though you could word it something like:
Hi,

Do you want to run an Air Training Squadron in your local community, use the cadets and staff as your own personal slave army, accrue large amounts of money through their efforts and the good will of hte wider community then misappropriate the squadron’s wealth and resources for your own personal gain?

No?

Good. Then maybe you’d consider helping us out as a member of our civilian committee…
Ha, not quite what I hand in mind. I made my own in the end… personal details etc. removed so that others can use it should they need one.

This year, we are opening up attendance this year
I hope you proofread it!!

Nooooooo! :frowning: I did proof read it and didn’t pick up on it. I also got 3 other people to read it too and they obviously didn’t either! Fortunately I’ve only dished it out to one of the two units so far so I’ll correct that for the second unit, cheers!

I think the word committee (which you use 5 times in your letter) will scare some interested candidates off…

Some people view the word committee as instantly meaning a group of old people sitting around talking about how important they are because they’re on the committee.

I much prefer to use the term “friends of XXX Squadron” when writing letters to recruit new civ com members.

What’s the time commitment for CivCom members?

I was invited to the annual ‘open evening’ at our local ATC sqn last year. Interesting. I felt I could help if I offered to be on the CivCom but I suspect I would have too many views on how to run the place…

And this fits in with the future plans of the CWC changes.

I sent a letter out trying to recruit CWC members and I got staff :-). No new CWC though.

I’m just going to trick the parents into attending the AGM by holding a presentation eve/quiz event on that day.

Then once I’ve got a captive audience I’ll pounce

The problem doing anything at the AGM is… that its generally the height of teduim and not the best event to persuade new Civ Com members.

Why not arrange an open/parents evening as an alternative. Make it lively. Present something with the civ com chair when theyre enthused, rather than bored!
