Latest "pause" - BTEC in Aviation Studies

I don’t really like the PTS & think it’s excessive. The classifications are/were meant to be basic aviation knowledge so I would kept the leading subjects.

Where it goes weird is the senior & master where it’s just gets excessive & the topics too heavy.

Perhaps have senior linked to pts badge & master along with moi?

You mean how it used to be?

Master didnt use to exist (although there was staff 1)

Tbh I don’t think the master level of aviation knowledge actually adds anything.

Yes, but that’s what I meant. The yellow lanyard used to represent to top classification (Staff Part 2).

Yep, and a cadet over 18 was an Instructor Cadet. Even if they couldn’t instruct.

Can see why the changes happened.

We never had instructor cadets at the time I’m talking about, just 22 year old CWOs.

Update in today’s Weekly Brief

Was just coming to post the same! No enrolments until Sep 2024!!

So I assume that will mean no BTECs given out until 2025 then?! Also only 500 places.

Wait, I just re-read it. Spece BTEC enrol Sep 2024. Aviation BTEC enrol Sep 2025!

I think my squadron will be scrapping almost all classification training with that news.

Realistically only a minority of my cadets that joined this year will get the chance if it is a 2025 start. Isn’t the average time spent in cadets about 2.5 years?

Plus the brief suggests it will be self study!

I’d love to have some alternative aviation related activities for classroom based nights.

On top of school work?

quite the delay from the original announcement back in July 2019 at RIAT - i recognise the announcement isn’t for the BTEC, instead for an OU certificate without a badge - but shows the direction the Space syllabus has come in 4 years

I do wonder though, how many Cadets, or even Squadrons got on board and enrolled onto that basic syllabus and how much genuine uptake there will be in 2024 on this new one?

Classification requirements still exist as pre-requirements for cadet training particularly leading.

You can probably have master as self choice though & not have to worry bout completing first class log books any more.

The only requirements I can think of are for being a staff cadet and radio, the latter is often ignored. What others are there?

Isn’t there a requirement for classification for promotion?

Also Cadets would become uncompetitive when applying for QAIC, JL, IACE etc.

It’s not my call anyway, but I think it’s a balance. Cadets can still self study at home, or we can allocate time on squadron if that’s what they want. But personally I don’t see a point continuing a boring activity that nobody enjoys.

Radio is always ignored :smiling_face_with_tear:

But if cadets are trained according to the Blue course then that validates the First Class radio section anyway. It would just mean running the Blue course, with the on air assessment, not the FCC content.

Which is probably a good thing.

I meant the requirement to be first class for bronze, leading for silver etc

Yeah that is ignored

It’s more a guideline than a requirement.

Last official figure I saw said 18 months.
