Event he’s not fully familiar with, their is a 1 Star running the BMC who is fully aware of the event, but Special K doesn’t let our Cadets March because he knows better than the 1 Star who runs the BMC.
Special K is the one responsible & being asked to be the point where the buck stops but not getting the assurances that satisfy in terms of safety particular when there’s other horror stories in the corps.
I know very little bout road marching so I kinda wonder if I would have made a different decision with the information available
I’m leaning towards that if I was in the commandants position I might well have done the same.
The forecast the day before was in the 20s.
Would you have not cancelled RIAT as well given the information that CAC acted on for Nijmegan and didn’t act on for that event?
Then surely any capable lead would talk to the people in the know, with years of experience, to pull together a structured response to the event.
For something that happened in 2019, why was it not followed through at the time. We may have changed our ComdtAC, but those in key areas haven’t
Why is everyone being tarred with the same brush, instead of targeting those who have gone against the set rules of the day.
This…very much this.
Gather the facts then make an informed decision…

That would mean trusting the volunteers as there aren’t really any perm staff that understand Nijmegen.
Just impossible. What if the volunteer turns out to be right?
Unless… we get a perm staff whose role is purely road marching!
He could’ve trusted the 1 star in charge of the BMC
“They” don’t trust the CAA or BGA with regards to flying / gliding. so a 1* is very unlikely to be heard!
But strangely they trust commercial civil airlines for overseas camps and the international exchange scheme, strangely the aircraft involved are certified to CAA/JAA standards by CAA/JAA certified pilots, flight crews and engineers. Funny that!!!.
In “their” defence, the Chair of the CAA is Sir Stephen Hillier, so…
Wait a minute…
Is Chris Waller still running Nijmegen for the BMC? Because he was a CFAV who ran a Nijmegen team for years before he joined the regs!
Whom most of the senior staff worked with or for during their Air Force career so there maybe some more personal aspects creeping in.
Bringing it back to RM you don’t suppose something similar happen between CAC & BMC 1star. They butted heads when they were OF3s & held a grudge since.
Nothing against RM from a personal view although not an activity i would get involved in. It is where it fits within the Corps. AT has its own setups with 2 Corp owned centres. Risk factor wise apart from the overseas travel surely isn’t any greater than DofE Gold or similar. Ultimately its about risk and reward if RAFAC can guarantee x number of places at Nijmegen each year and cost is subsidised by either individual Cadets or Squadrons/Wings then the appeal is much greater. If the highest level of RM is 4 marches locally on a Sunday and 2 days in the UK, the risk is still the same but the reward isnt. Its like doing the DofE expeds (i know there is more to DofE) but then not getting anything from it (badge or recognition wise)
Err. Apart from VA, cost is already entirely covered by non-public funds?
Aha, yes, but VA is still limited for Nijmegen isn’t it?
As I understand it, yes.
I guess I’m not understanding @Sm12310’s argument. The suggestion is that there would be greater appeal if it was cheaper to the organisation, yet the cost to the organisation is already very small in comparison to most activities as it’s almost entirely self-funded.
I think this is naïve from the little I know of this activity; I expect the event itself it much greater in terms of risk profile (particularly safeguarding) given the setup at Camp Heumensoord. It instils a competitive element which isn’t there in many AT / DofE scenarios which could drive people to push beyond their limits, risking injury.
Obvs that’s why we have experienced leaders to reduce those risks - but I think the risk profile itself is probably very different.
Possibly me not putting forward my point correctly. I am all for RM as long as there is the final achievement so to speak. However it is arranged Nijmegen needs to happen to make the risk rewardable. Ultimately you could do a Corps RM across England from a particular Station and job is a good one but it is a lot of risk, paperwork and time for not much effort
