The previously discussed TG Letter gives authority for the use of Rifle Lesson 3.1.
Rifle 3.1 requires the Load to normally be carried out in the standing position. It goes on to say at para 195 that if the cadet/CFAV is required to load in any other position, they will first be ordered into it.
The WHT stipulates “Adopt the Prone Position”, followed by “Load”. As everyone that conducts WHTs should know, the WHT is a laid-down minimum standard that should not be messed with, ergo:
Cadets should normally load in the standing position. In the WHT, they should load in the prone position because that’s what’s required by the test.
Where’s the confusion?
On a separate note
I understand that the establishment of TG Letters is intended to address some of the issues with the dissemination of policy in the shooting/TG world. I believe the intention is to reduce the need for absorbing policy by osmosis, as mentioned earlier in the thread. I’d hope that TG letters will be backed up with CROs and emails going forward.
The confusion I believe lies in the comment on SharePoint, presumably made by the HQAC TG staff who posted the new Lesson 3.1 (and we have already discussed whether a comment made in this way has any clout as policy) which says ‘This version, Lesson 3.1 replaces the original Lesson 3 in Pam 5c. During WHTs (see Pam 21c Chapter 5) drills are to be carried out as taught in Lesson 3.1’.
To the ACF and CCF. I assume you will receive it shortly as it is the only official CF manual for the L98A2 and L86A2.[/quote]The version currently available on BADER is dated March 2012…
Since it is not protectively marked, and I am feeling helpful, here is a summary of the main changes:

[ul]

[li]Loading is now done in the standing position[/li]
[li]The time limit for magazine filling has been removed.[/li]
[/ul]
nice that the prone position for the function test has been removed
para 01145a doesnt really cover how to “adopt the prone position” only what is required (hold the rifle steady, keep it pointing in the safe direction, lie down on the ground) - doesnt really offer much of an explaination
why swap lesson 8&9 around?
i can see the thinking behind removing the SC in IA drills to bring the drill into line with the L85…but why was there in the first place if it is now deemed a pointless action?
and the tap forward on the NSP will be an interesting change. i didnt teach it in Lesson1 and was quick to jump on any instructor who repremanded a Cadet for not tapping forward on the NSP…the same old argument came back “yeh but it is good practise”…true, but didnt excuse the instructor for not knowing the PAM. now we see a reversal of that.
It frustrates me that intructors will now be right through ignorance rather than due diligence and integrity of knowing the PAM.
Personally i thought it made sense to me, why tap the cocking hand forward to ensurance it correctly seated if there is no intention to fire a round…?
i know of plenty of WIs who will be glad to see the 10rds in 20s gone…but why go as far as 10? what does filling with 10 rds prove that cant be done with say 5…or even three rounds?
given the changes can anyone predict the “conversion” requirement for those who have already passed under the old system?
or is a quiet word prior to their re-newing WHT:
dont rush the mag load, there is no time limit
you should now make sure you tap forward on an NSP
function test doesnt have to be in the prone position
no need to check the SC on the IA drills.
its almost enough reason to re-teach, or at least have a “conversion” course given the variation in drills.
i’ve met enough Cadets who are confused enough by the L98, rattling through that prior to a WHT will only confused them further i am sure!
Lesson 8 (firing from other positions) will now be taught to ACF cadets at 1* level, whereas it was 2* before. I guess they put it before ‘Mechanism’ to show that it should be taught prior to undertaking the WHT. They haven’t said whether or not they will change the 1* assessment as well (currently just a WHT).
Someone being “over safe” probably.
Ditto. it makes things simpler but is kind of annoying at the same time. I still have those doing 7 point checks on NSPs to pick on though!
