Is it too PC to stop a Sqn viewing of old classics such as The Dambusters?
Would’ve thought that as long as no one could be offended by the dogs name, should be fine?
I’ve heard some sqns having a rollocking for suggesting to do just that in case it might offend ethnic cadets/staff…
films like this are by no means a documentary but they do “document” how life was during the war…
if a dogs name is more important than the story then i feel someone is being too precious
i am not trying to belittle the example of the dog’s name, but there is a distinct element of “war” going on in this film as well as other similar classics - should we not be cautious of offending persons affected by war???
to answer the question = yes i feel it is too PC to ban a film based on a non-speaking part.
Whether we like it or not, that was the dogs name. Gibson was a flawed hero - an imperfect individual. By today’s standards, he may be judged differently, but without the courage, determination and talent of Gibson and many others like him, we’d not be living in a free world now. We must understand history in the context of the time not revise it based on today’s standards. If that is uncomfortable for some, then maybe it should be used to spark a discussion on how things have changed and how nobody is perfect. So yes, in my view, it is too PC.
I watch a lot of the 70s sitcoms which if made today would have the thought police all over them. Ironically I hear cadets saying they have watched them and thought they were funny. A group were extolling Porridge, which a masterpiece, and Dad’s Army, which has it’s moments as well. Not sure they’ve got onto Steptoe or the Likely Lads.
I wouldn’t get too precious about it, maybe advise parents and let them make the decision for you. I think every time it’s on the tele, there is a “some people might find some of the language offensive”, which I think is a I’d better watch this comment. Anything that some of the tofu munching, sandal wearers might find offensive, is going to be a good watch.
Probably not … I know some cadets well under 16 who’ve watched Deadpool, probably the worst Marvel film to date, whoever gave that a 15 cert needs shooting.
FMJ is a Miss Marple compared to Deadpool.
I’m pretty sure later releases of the film include a slight dubbing so the dog is now called ‘digger’. You honestly wouldn’t notice unless you’ve seen the original release with the original name undubbed.
I would probably shy away from viewing the original only because the focus of the dogs name will most likely take away from the great film.
Rubbish. Show the film as is and if anyone says anything explain the history.
Political Correctness is a modern phenomena (last 20 odd years) dreamed up by left wing, white. middle class, hand wringers all over the world, who feel bad about the past and feel they need to apologise for everything that happened and created the world we live in, while tucking into their organically and respionsibly sourced quinoa and tofu sipping a poncy over-priced coffee. It’s their way to self flagellate.
The worst thing that happened was that the left wing media got hold of this notion and poisoned the whole of society with this bile.
It’s these idiots that think we should apologise and rename things with any sort of in their mind negative historic connotation.
Do this. I watched a DVD of “Tom and Jerry” (original episodes) the other week. It was completely unedited, save for a message at the start saying that it was made in a different era, and the depiction of certain characters was no longer acceptable, but to change them would be to deny our history. I’ll try and get a pic before I go to work…
So you think it is Ok to use the N word or P word or W word or S word as long there is context?
Personally I feel the connotations linked to the N word and all it represents are so fowl and beyond the pale that using the word now (no matter what the context) harks back to a time when it was OK to treat people of a different ethnic back ground differently.
The N word is an odd one because it has been “reclaimed” by a certain demographic and is routinely used in normal conversation. Because of this, I cannot accept that it remains taboo for any separate demographic unless it is being used as an insult or an attack.
This is not unlike how the C word is used as a term of endearment in Scotland.
