Incoming Region Changes - ASTRA

Central and East Yorkshire Wing are gaining Squadrons as the RFCA area is Yorkshire and Humberside

After the fact maybe.

This though, is a travesty. If there isn’t, there should have been a date set for losing/moving OCWs to have informed their units by, which gaining OCs were not to contact or talk about gained units prior to.

OC GMW hasn’t just ā€œjumped the gunā€, they’ve completely cut OC Staffs legs off! Was it never a thought to offer a courtesy check before announcing?!

What a bombshell to hit your inbox from someone you probably don’t even know…

He has form…

But on the other side, we’re being told that these plans are all well known and have been communicated… So who do you believe?

As ever, it’s been cack-handed communications by people who think they know how to handle communications professionally.

Your posts should be constructive and not personally insulting or attacking. Please remember that.

I think it’s bad form all around on the comms front, OC Staffs Wing wasn’t given the chance to brief people himself, poor show to leave him in the lurch.

The question now turns to what happens with the squadrons that have been told they are moving. If the staff want to remain in their current Wings rather than move, squadrons moving to new wings may potentially have very minimal staff numbers, and with multiple squadrons being moved, and a higher demand on staffing with an already low level of staff Corps wide, what response will there be to staff trying to move? Try to order staff to stay? Threats of termination of volunteering? Transfer ban? Who knows, I suspect there will be some kind of poorly thought out knee jerk however.

I couldn’t give a scooby what Wing I’m in, no doubt still likely to have a chump somewhere in the CoC

Presumably if you are staying on your squadron then what wing you are in makes little day to day difference… So not really an issue?

More an issue is if you are moving squadron staff that hold wing posts - as they may be moving to a wing where this is already filled… So would lose a roll and leave a gap in the wing they have departed.

I more meant remain in the current Wing, rather than remain at the Squadron.

Yes but why does your wing matter unless you hold a wing post?

I supernumerary at one of the units that are affected - it moving Regions means it makes it difficult to remain doing so. I’d be responsible for governance in one Region, but then operating under another duty holder (and different risk appetites/requirements) when at the unit to deliver any activities.

Don’t have the headspace for that I don’t think!

  • Existing relationships with WSO
  • Existing teams e.g. AT, Fieldcraft, D&C
  • Feeling of belonging

There are plenty of reasons a person might want to stay, particularly if they’ve been part of that Wing for some time, are familiar with the personalities, squadrons, cadets outside of one’s own squadron etc.

OK I see what you are saying. Maybe I just don’t feel particularly attached to mine!

I suspect plenty of people will share that feeling too!

There is also the risk of volunteer cascade.

not talking about individuals per se but not everyone gets on with one another - that’s life, normally things are professional.

However if being forcibly changed & that change is badly managed some volunteers may use the change as an opportunity to bail out to avoid the stress or take advantage of the natural end. COs roles are stressful enough and some may decide to bang out.

Then it’s a case of who replaces them, and then more staff leaving as they don’t want to continue.

It’s the friendships & interactions that keep a lot of people in the organisation. Once that goes, people starting asking why the keep doing this and you then get a domino effect.

In the long run this can be a good thing if managed well but managed poorly and things just spiral into unrecognisable mess.

Let’s be clear.

This has thus far been…
Poorly communicated.
Poorly managed
Poorly executed.

Am I surprised.
Not at all.
This org is utter garbage at almost everything above Wing level.

Could apply to SATT staff too. Probably more examples out there.

Definitely does apply.
