I'm bored with whinging - so, a gear thread

How much is research and development for us to make the perfect ‘RAFAC 30-50-75 litre’ rucksacks? This time in 5-7yrs we could all be a few tenners richer :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I cannot comment on any of the above bags… the wife and children have stalled my niche rucksack collecting hobby. Sorry.

Oh how dare they

Do they not understand the importance of such a hobby?

In all seriousness, do you have any recommendations of bags from your yesteryears of bag-collecting?

On another note, fellow resident kit Guru @angus seems rather quiet - have your family quelled your niche passion too?

Nah, we’ve got too many outbuildings for me to hide my stash in…

I’m just pumping old skool - managed to find some über tasty old Karrimor Hot Rock daysacks (a black and purple, and a red, french blue and grass green one), and an old Berghaus Cyclops Alp ii 80 litre job.

My Munro finally - and quite unexpectedly - died . Within the space of a week, three different webbing straps snapped with about the same strain you’d pull kitchen roll apart with.

Sent it back to Berghaus, they replaced the straps, I then sold it on Fleabay as SAS/PARA/Commando war porn, but I’ve not decided what to replace it with. Obviously, I have to replace it - I’m thinking about another Munro, pumped up by Dragon Supplies (see website for details), or a Savotta (though I’ve also seen some horrific reviews on build quality).

Short version, I’m not sure…

I’ve been using an old Crusader (faded DPM, ftw) as my quad bike bag. It’s pretty tasty…

Munros were all the rage before we got issued PLCE bergens. I think the side pouches were cross compatible? I had a Para bergen instead: much less practical but I was all about being ally at the time.

My Osprey cycling backpack is looking a bit tatty, and this week the buckle that attaches the chest strap to the shoulder strap snapped. I should probably get a new one, but CBA with a backpack search

Take a photo and send it to Osprey. They sent me replacement clips off the back of an email… for something I bought second hand from eBay!

I mean, that’s the least of its problems, but worth a shot!

Remember the MTA 40% off…

MTA?

Is this some hillwalking thing I’m too much of a paddler to understand?

Yes, but absolutely worth it for the various discounts on kit.

Do I need to do a qual?

I’ve used my Montane and Osprey discounts a lot over the years!

I think you do, yes.

But I also think you can technically register for a qual, and then get the MTA membership… :eyes:

Looking for some recommendation now myself; Cabin bags!

I’m after a decent bag, roll along or backpack style that hits the absolute maximum of the Easyjet/BA unrestricted cabin bag size, 56x45x25. There are loads of options in the slightly smaller sizes, like 56x40x20 etc, but I feel I’m missing out!

Current contenders are the following:

Lots of you do lots of traveling for work and the like, so wondering if you can lend some advice!

Things like this look good, but then I’m giving up 10/15L of space:

Travelpro are a very good brand & highly recommended.

Some smaller cases on sale at the moment i think.

I’ve purchased several items from luggagesuperstore, very good customer service & some good prices:

A lot of crew use American Tourister.

If you are going to travel a lot with the case, it’s worth paying for good quality / extended warranty.

Thanks! That’s added many things to look at.

I’ve already got about 13 flights between now and the end of March. I’ve purchased EasyjetPlus so I can get this size bag on for free, and I can avoid a hold bag.

Always happy to pay a bit more for something much higher quality! Saves waste and money in the longer term.

My Osprey Wheely bag is looking pristine after years of use.

Back in the old days when I joined the Bar, every lawyer had a wheely case to carry papers, and we had an eye for those that would last, I went for Osprey and it was a good call.

I do like Osprey, and have their good discount…

My main aim here is maximising space, though, and they don’t do a bad right at the max size.

I have the 80L Sojourn as my main hold bag for big trips, and it’s fantastic!

Can’t say I’ve used on myself, but they look good - supposed to meet the max legal carry on size, presumably that is the same as for the US?
