If you could redesign the uniform, what would you add to it?

If we are going for a bit of thread revival…

For cadets

Step 1 chin off parade shoes and make black boots permitted in blues

Step 2 replace the trousers with something more hard wearing. Not necessarily PCS but something practical

Step 3 go back to the crew neck jumper

Step 4 if budget allowed introduce a blues jacket (GPJ or the soft shell that was being trialled)

For staff as above but allow 2C / working blue shirt, no tie, and berets for officers in blues.

However I still think it would be more sensible to just move over to MTP and be done with it.

With you on everything except the crew neck jumper. I genuinely can’t wear them, for some reason I get really uncomfortable

I think if they made them out of more modern material it would be ok. I have acquired a green one (new-ish issue Jumper, HW, OG, for the annoying of WOs of) and it’s much less itchy than our old blue / grey. And the v neck looks daft without a tie IMO.

Yeah, round necks are better without ties.

I did think make the stripes / braids Velcro so on re ranking just slap another stripe on, but yes you are right (and the regulars do have them)

Shorts and flip-flops - after tonight it’ll all be online from home…

As much as a pain it would be to get into, I’d l love to see the original “full” dress returned, with a high collar tunic and leather pilots cap as head dress.

I think the RAF is being very brave - really pumping for the Luftwaffe '39 look…

Anyone ranked sgt or above can wear one of them, but I bet they look rubbish with NCO rank slides and no wings.

Knights Cross and Swastika

What colour rankslides are worn for officers? Asking for a friend…

Technically the braid should be on a backing the same colour as the epaulettes IIRC

I have one of the approved blue leather jackets. Nice and warm even without the winter liner and I don’t have any wings. As YO8102 mentioned, SNCOs of any branch (including RAFAC) can wear one but at personal expense. They currently sit at ~£500 but will probably last forever if you look after it.

When I was RAFAC I asked Aviation Leather Craft for some leather off-cuts so I could have RAFAC embroidered onto the bottom of the slide then sent the pieces off to Combat Logos for the braid and lettering to be added. TBH Alan did a fantastic job and I’ve still got them in a draw. I’m back to VRT now so I just have my pins on normal rank slides.

Now I’m confused. I thought that (1) RAFVR(T) was only retained for pilots, and (2) you were a pilot?

VRT is for any AEF staff, and I believe mr scrounger is of a higher calibre

I am still wearing mine. Much better than a v neck

The old crew neck jumper just reminds me of being a cadet and standing out in the rain doing drill smelling of moth balls…ah…memories

Ironically, it was a v-neck when I was a cadet (but ribbed, like the crew necks) and I have a crew neck now.

This seems almost proper old school - if we’re going back this far the. I would suggest:

Working blue shirt, blue jumper & brassard may be worn with MTP trousers & black boots.
